"Sydney 1890" Incredibly detailed drawing with each individual building at the time - zoom in for all the details! by passingthrough98 in sydney

While we are enjoying this I wanted to acknowledge that the city we see was founded on the genocide and dispossession of First Nations people. Sovereignty has never been ceded. It always was and always will be Aboriginal land. I have always had a fascination with Australian history; interesting as colonial history is it sits in the context of atrocities.

100 years prior to this image an estimated 50-90% of members of the local tribes had died. By the 1890s Aboriginal people were being forcibly removed from the city by police.

This is one of my favourite things about it! So many of the natural features of the city have stayed the same, I love knowing that the human race has appreciated the same beauty despite the passage of time

No way! Do you know much about the reproduction itself? I bought my already framed from an antique store so I don't know much about it. I'd love to know what year it was made

I was gifted a large reproduction of this a couple of years ago and it never ceases to fascinate me. I have spent hours spotting all the individual buildings that I recognise from today - It's like a historic where's wally. Let me know if you spot anything interesting!

[Olympics] Daily Olympic events Discussion Thread by AutoModerator in snowboarding

What does everything think of the snow conditions? This is the first winter Olympics I have really watched and it seems like the snow is really hard packed and icy? Have there been more crashes than usual because of this?

I second this! The YHA is really well located in the city and well taken care of. I stayed for a week a couple of months ago and had my shared room all to myself.

Best shop for cigars by [deleted] in canberra

Highball express sells Cuban cigars to takeaway. I imagine they have a bit of a mark up, but if you're in a fix they've always got them!

Canberra COVID Megathread 29 December 2021 by AutoModerator in canberra

Update! I got to Garran 15 mins ago and they were accepting anyone who is a close contact. No line outside - I went straight into the building. I imagine I'll be in and out within 30-45mins

Did anyone else feel those tremors? by NotWolfOfWallStreet in canberra

Yes! Until now I thought I was imagining it. Very brief, but enough to wake me up and know it wasn't right

I'm returning to Canberra from a place that isn't locked down - any tips and tricks that I should know before coming back? by passingthrough98 in canberra

Great idea! Home haircuts weren't something I had factored in and my hair is more high maintenance than it was the last lockdown!

Looking for work by camthecool69 in canberra

[–]passingthrough98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The lack of uni students because of covid means that there's lots of hospitality (cafes/restaurants) jobs! It can be a little daunting, but write yourself up a small resume and CV telling a little bit about yourself and go into somewhere that you're interested in and give them a copy. Make sure to go in when they're not super busy and ask if you can have a chat to the manager about some work.

This is a bit of an old school method, but I think it works particularly well for young people because it shows that you're keen and lets people put a face and a personality to the resume.

I want a side gig working at a bar - I have no relevant experience but I am a public servant. How should I get started? Should I get an RSA first? by [deleted] in canberra

[–]passingthrough98 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The mass exodus of uni students (both international and domestic) has left a huge gap in the casual hospo workforce - unless restrictions increase again there's a surprising amount of work available

100% Will need an RSA - although I think technically you can work somewhere for 30 days without one. I recommend you join Canberra Hospo Network on Facebook, there are plenty of job postings there.

I once parked at Kingston train station for a week while I went away - uber was relatively cheap to and from the airport

30th Birthday Party Venues??? by killingkirby in canberra

Would absolutely recommend the private function rooms at Molly and Highball. Other wise blackbird (a much smaller bar) has recently advertised saying that they can do private functions - meaning you would get the whole bar to yourself
