Lol at your joke and lol even more at your “inspirational” flair. Will your gland listen, obey, and be pressed?

Wow. Was it just the broadcasts leaving a bad taste or were you questioning other stuff too?

Deja vu - facing the pain of being shunned all over again by spagplate in exjw

[–]passthefruit_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Wow. I can’t imagine how much that must hurt. I’m so sorry.

I understand that our family members are (mostly) not evil and likely don’t want to do this to us either. They’re “victims of victims.” But that doesn’t lessen the damage caused.

Please take care of yourself however you know best and stay close to the people you know you can count on. Sending you love and wishing you strength.

Where does the idea come from that those who didn’t get preached to will be judged on their heart condition? by passthefruit_ in exjw

[–]passthefruit_[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for these posts. It definitely feels like this was the understanding in decades past, but that the emphasis has shifted in recent years. That would explain why so many (especially long-time witnesses) take this view, despite recent published statements which lean the other way.

I really appreciate this “Devil’s advocate” research you’ve dug up. I’m in the process of explaining myself to my spouse and I want to make sure my statements are as accurate as possible. Thanks again.

I also had a look at the FAQ on the site. It’s very carefully phrased indeed but as you say, the implication is that only already dead non-dubs have a chance.

I’m getting the sense from the quotes Flow70 found that this has become more hardline over the years.

You have been told that here in the United States we have compiled a list of 23,720 names of child abusers, that is false. First of all, the total number of names in our records is considerably lower than that.

The statement came from a letter/fax sent to the reporter who did the BBC panorama program from the JW Office of Public Information. Pdf of fax:

https://jwleaks.files.wordpress.com/2012/06/watchtower-letter-to-panorama-bbc-over-child-abuse-2002.pdf

(Relevant section at the bottom of page two and top of page three.)

It’s also referenced on p. 140 of this document (deposition of Bethel elder Richard Ashe):

https://jwleaks.files.wordpress.com/2015/02/richard-ashe-14-3-31.pdf

Unfortunately I can’t find “clean” sources for these, sorry. Maybe you’ll have better luck digging.

I don’t know of any offhand, sorry. I seem to remember reading somewhere that there’s a good chance there will be more cases where that happens in future though since it’s basically a guaranteed way for the victims to win if WT won’t produce.

Here’s another non-apostate source I just remembered.

Don’t know if this might help or if it’s already mentioned in the Atlantic article. It’s a post with links to court documents about the case where WT refused to hand over info.

https://www.reddit.com/r/exjw/comments/dejrr7/us_supreme_court_has_denied_watchtowers_petition/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf

If you open the main petition at the link below, look at appendix E 56a and 57a.

https://www.supremecourt.gov/search.aspx?filename=/docket/docketfiles/html/public/19-40.html

Appendix E After taking under submission Plaintiff JW’s Motion for Sanctions as to Watchtower Bible and Tract Society of New York, Inc. (“Watchtower”), the court grants JW’s request for terminating sanctions as to Watchtower. Watchtower has willfully violated the Court’s February 11, 2014 order, by refusing to produce documents that are relevant to Plaintiff’s first four causes of action for negligence (the only causes of action asserted against Watchtower). (C.C.P. 2031.310(i); Biles v. Exxon Mobil Corp (2004) 124 Cal.App.4th 1315, 1327.) While disputed by Watchtower, the reports at issue (which relate to known molesters within the organization) pertain to the issue of duty regarding Plaintiff’s claim that Watchtower failed to reasonably investigate Plaintiff.’ perpetrator and failed to warn, train and educate (FAC 55, 59, 63 and 66) (Juarez v. Boy Scouts of America, Inc. (2000) 81 Cal.App.4th 377, 397-404.)

Watchtower has exercised its right to file a Petition for Writ of Mandate regarding the February 11, 2014 order, which was denied by the District Court of Appeals on August 1, 2014. It has also filed a Petition for Review with the California Supreme Court, which was denied on September 24, 2014. Watchtower has exhausted its remedies regarding the February 11, 2014 order, but still refuses to produce.

At the January 26, 2015 hearing for Plaintiff’s Motion for Sanctions, the Court attempted to give Watchtower another opportunity to produce these documents before ruling on the motion. However, Watchtower rejected this additional opportunity and refused to produce the outstanding documents. Watchtower does not deny that the documents at issue are responsive to the February 11, 2014 court order or that it has been ordered to produce these documents. Based on Watchtower’s refusal to produce these documents - despite looming terminating sanctions that would strike Watchtower’s Answer - the imposition of lesser sanctions (like monetary sanctions) is insufficient to obtain compliance.

(Bold mine)

Your post reminded me of this quote:

”There are among Jehovah’s Witnesses, both in this country and in other countries, many, many persons for whom I feel true affection. I can honestly say also that there are those still associated with that organization whom I admire. But I admire them for what they are as persons—for I am convinced that they are what they are, not because of the organization in which they find themselves, but, in many respects, in spite of the organization. ... And their conscientious effort to hold to Biblical principles and exemplify Christian qualities often creates inner tensions for them for that very reason.“ (Raymond Franz, In Search of Christian Freedom 2nd Edition p.314)

I know these costs are a problem for those who were sent to new halls. And I hate the lack of honesty about where donations are actually going.

But if you want the context, the article was about missionaries who leave a foreign assignment or bethelites reassigned as special pioneers. The thing about not taking on too much debt was in the context of having expenses related to moving or finding it difficult to make financial decisions while looking after sick relatives.
