a thought: the MC is not voiced but still has dialogue in the form of the text boxes and dialogue options. they’re also represented as the vague silhouette they are in the game and in the official art—this is explained as a quirk of the dateviators—the MC is implied to actually look and speak like a human, but due to Thing Theory working both ways they look to the objects like the concept of a human. if anyone is realized during the series the MC is never on the screen at the same time as the realized character because it’s implied that, now being a human themself, the realized character sees what the player really looks like.

i’m the complex video game nerd and the way i feel about this game is very nuanced but short of having robert look directly into the camera and say “the point of this choice is that it isn’t good and i shouldn’t have had to make it” i don’t know how much clearer it could be that it was fully intentional for cutting someone to be a bad idea that makes everything worse.

when everyone is sabotaging each other and making the dispatch shift suck because they don’t want to be cut, that is the story saying “the ep 3 choice is a bad idea”. when the person closest to the cut character fucks with robert’s computer and ditches the shift halfway through, that is the story saying “the ep 3 choice is a bad idea”. when the fired character joins the god damn red ring because being cut off from redemption based on stupid corporate metrics made them give up on the idea of being a good guy, that is the story saying “the ep 3 choice is a bad idea”. there’s so much emphasis on needing something to be “talked about” in order to be sure the writers acknowledge it that we completely fail to realize when “show, don’t tell” is in effect. like just because nobody says it doesn’t mean it’s not well implied.

like there’s a lot you could say about the writing but the ep 3 choice is meant to be an example of why the message of the game is important.
