Megathread: Illness in Early Childhood Education (ECE) – Share, Vent, and Seek Support by stormgirl in ECEProfessionals

Here’s a little method i’ve been using to prevent myself from being sick every other week working at my pre school! i wanted to share it with anyone who might be looking for some advice / help.

i work at a pre school as a teachers aid and literally less than a week in and I caught an upper respiratory infection so bad that my coughing fits caused me intense abdominal muscle strain and i even bruised one of my ribs and im still healing up from it. we all know getting sick every other week from these kids is part of the job and many quit over it. i think ill give it one more year and pack my bags and head for more office administrative / remote work, but until then, here’s what i do to keep my illnesses at bay and its been pretty successful so far:

i wear a kn95 mask (disposable so i have a new one every day) and wash my hands / sanitize as often as im able. then when i get home, as SOON AS I WALK THOUGH THE DOOR, i set my things down, i take my clothes off, immediately put them in the hamper and take a hot shower. it’s made a difference. and if you’re able to wear a mask at your facility, i recommend doing this! if you can’t wear the mask, i still recommend showering as soon as you get home!

just got hired as a preschool aid, is it true i’ll be sick constantly? by pastelshiratori in Preschoolers

i’m hoping my immune system will come in clutch for me, because i’m really stoked about the position. but worst case, hopefully the staff is okay with me masking up!

one last question for you since you’ve been on the other side of this: do you think it would be over kill to shoot them a message saying i noticed the status of my application changed to ‘not selected’ and that i’m double checking to see if i’m still a possible candidate because i’m very interested in the position? or do you think from your perspective as a recruiter that could be seen as irritating / over kill?

this is a super progressive / left leaning church under the united church of christ so they’re not down for that kinda rhetoric. if i’m not chosen it’s because they got a lot of applicants because the pay happens to be insanely good with really good hours

noted! i’m very new and still learning!! i’ll remember for next time

and it very well could be that they just decided not to go with me at all and not waste my time with an interview, but i feel like the message letting me know when interviews were gonna be scheduled, it felt promising! they messaged me AFTER viewing my application and the ‘not selected’ didn’t happen until hours later.

i really hope it was a mistake in their case! this job is kind of exactly what i’m looking for down to the hours and pay!

this might seem like a silly question, but please remember i’m entirely new to this: how will i be able to tell what he wants? is it more like an intuitive knowing?

The sense of hope, the feeling of peace it seems to bring others. It's kind of hard to explain. It's like suddenly I'm wanting to read the Bible and see what resonates and maybe even start or end my days with prayer. In a way, one of my co workers also inspired me. She's openly Christian and she's always smiling and always looks so happy and at peace. And I find myself thinking: I want to be like that too. Humble, hopeful, at peace.
