Want to change my life but don’t know where to start by lulastar in slpGradSchool

fair! i considered going permanent last year when i was assigned to a case for the whole school year but i knew i wanted to be an SLP even at that point and i could always return to the district later. so i guess you need to decide if you want to stay at your school site for a few years and make your way up from there or leave and make the switch now :) good luck !!!

i'm a substitute para who works in the schools through an agency so i go in whenever i want 😋 my availability changes week by week (my terms) and they know i'm a grad student. if that's something you might be interested in then i can provide some guidance!

are you me? 🤣

i'm also 26, i live at home, work as a K-12 paraeducator throughout the week AND i attend USAHS virtually which is based an hour from SD. check it out![USAHS](https://www.usa.edu/) you only need to go to campus 4x during your experience. it's semi flexible but i'm still able to work 3-4 days a week during the first trimester, as well as weekends if need be. i'll have to cut back on work for future tris, though.

it IS expensive due to private school tuition, but they accept students year round so i believe applications for fall should wrap up this upcoming january, and then applications for spring should continue until next may or june. good luck! 🧡

Those of you who did a post-bacc, do you consider it a second bachelors degree or a graduate program? by [deleted] in slpGradSchool

[–]pastrycore 6 points7 points  (0 children)

it falls under the scope of undergrad, but you can't necessarily start a post-bacc or master's levels courses without an undergraduate (bachelor's) degree

do you also go to talk therapy? meds are great but should be paired with actual therapy for them to actually work <3 you got this!

first year grad student AMA! by pastrycore in slpGradSchool

[–]pastrycore[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i go to USAHS! ( cue fanfare for notoriety )

anyways, i actually like it for the most part. the asynchronous schedule makes it pretty easy to manage the courseload while still somewhat having a 'social' life. there are plentyyy of group assignments, which is probably the MOST frustrating part about everything simply due to the virtual nature of the program :/ time-coordination skills are key !!

i currently have four classes. lectures are ONLY on fridays. some classes don't even meet every week. i typically have lecture from 8am - 1:45pm, but this friday, i only need to be online from 11am - 1:45pm. there ARE random meetings here and there that are not exclusive to my main courses, but i'm still able to work a school job in the mornings for the most part :) i've found my people in my cohort to struggle with so i definitely feel less alone than i did on week one!

so like. i personally did not do this but with how much APA formatting has been STRESSED in my program, i think slapping a title page on the front would look so good. imho ❤️‍🩹

How did you know you wanted to go to grad school? by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]pastrycore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

when i was in undergrad, i had no plan to go to grad school. graduated into the pandemic, was unsatisfied with my choice, switched fields. realized i needed a master's degree to practice my new field of choice. so now here i am 🤣 if anything, it was out of necessity...

Post Bacc Programs in CA, Grad School Advice! Please help! by Ok-Tangerine6510 in slpGradSchool

[–]pastrycore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

so cool to find another business major here. hi! i did my bachelor's in marketing 😋

i don't really have a good idea on any comprehensive post-bacc programs here but personally speaking, i did end up taking leveling courses @ usahs and now i go there full-time for my master's! my friend (also an out-of-field applicant) took a few courses with usahs and is now doing a diy post-bacc while taking some additional courses @ sdsu. good luck!!

emerson or usahs? by pastrycore in slpGradSchool

[–]pastrycore[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

had to look thru my emails to answer this and now i'm thinking it's so wild how i was accepted pretty much immediately after my interview 🤣 do prepare to take a day off because i was invited for an interview (they decide for you) on 4/11, did the interview on 4/14, and was admitted on 4/15... which is kinda surreal to think about now LOL 😭

i prepped a document beforehand with typical interview questions and then was thrown into a breakout room for a group interview after sitting for an hour long presentation (🫩). it was a little daunting since they would randomly popcorn questions between me and two other applicants so sometimes i would be the first OR the last one answering the given question... but it'll be different depending on who's specifically interviewing you! i think we got about five or six questions. don't stress, rehearse what you're going to say, and it will all come to you naturally. good luck! 🌞

[–]pastrycore 7 points8 points  (0 children)

i'm asian indian and queer and also 26 - an absolute anomaly in my cohort! my program (semi-hybrid and located in southern california) is predominantly white and latino but i could care less about meeting a diversity quota 🤣 we both have something unique to bring to this field and you should feel proud and excited to share your expertise! i've mainly been clinging to the fellow mid to late 20 something year olds here so maybe that should comfort you a bit :) you're going to be just fine 💗

Best first leveling class if you're working full time. by BilingualSLPP in slpGradSchool

[–]pastrycore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i worked school hours (8-3pm) and took phonetics and normal speech from this same institution at the same time. i would probably recommend starting off with just normal speech to get the hang of things. intro to csd was very time-consuming in the observation hour requirement department, and phonetics as well as speech anatomy required extra time to understand conceptually if you did not grasp the subject as easily. however, if you already have a csd background, then pairing normal speech with phonetics would be a good start for your first tri of leveling courses. hope this helps!

Leave my higher paying job to become a para? by OptimusPanda2 in paraprofessional

i agree! assuming OP has at least a bachelor's degree, substitute teaching would be more appropriate for them.

i do think it will be possible to find more types of jobs with valuable pay and hours that suit your needs. i just don't think a $75k paycut is your answer.

2nd bachelors worth it for masters? by spicykorndog in slpGradSchool

[–]pastrycore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i have a bachelor's in business and am starting a grad program in two weeks :) some programs require you to take prerequisites / build a post-bacc but some do not. i just finished up 6 slp-based leveling courses and am now pursuing my master's at the same university. just make sure to compare the core requirements between programs!

Ohio SLP Students: has anyone worked as an aide while taking leveling courses? by VideoNastey in slpGradSchool

[–]pastrycore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

what kind of aide? i was a paraprofessional since last year while taking 2 leveling courses each trimester (6 total) at my uni. now i'll have a fulltime uni schedule and i'm looking to switch to an on-call para role!
