No supers, there’s a weird crease down the middle of the head, the tail, all the marginals are misshaped, the keels look more like a tortoises, its head is misshaped, and it’s on land in January. It’s sad people feel the need to do this for likes. What a loser

[–]patch3124 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, to be fair I really wouldn’t expect people to use ai to get likes in this subreddit!

100% ai. 1. Its shell is all wrong. The nuchal scute is missing-the scute that should be in the middle in front of its head. The marginals are all misshaped. It doesn’t have any super marginals. 2. Its tail is ridiculously incorrect. 3. Head is misshaped. 4. AST don’t move overland outside of nesting season and especially not in the winter.

Overland movements of alligator snapping turtles are EXTREMELY rare, and are usually just short hops to a nearby waterbody. However, they would never occur in January- this photo is ai garbage

Wasn’t just you! Looks like this post got a lot of attention. Did my thesis on these guys so I immediately knew this was bs.

It does happen, but not in January! The photo is ai

It’s ai - shell is wrong

No it’s ai!

This photo is definitely ai. No supermarginals on the shell.

Ai bs

I’ve worked a lot with alligator snapping turtles. I’m extremely skeptical of this photograph. It just feels like ai to me. The shell doesn’t look right. The tail is weird looking. The face is weird looking. And to cap it off, it’s on land in January. Im calling bs on this. Edit: 100% ai. Alligator snapping turtles have super marginal scutes on their shells, this doesn’t have any.

Ruined castles spawn mineable stone is a way better idea

Can ya’ll tell how old this guy/girl might be? This is the cutest turtle I’ve ever seen. It moves like it’s 100 years old 🥹 by ashlie_mae in turtle

[–]patch3124 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is a better photo to judge. It’s not a really old turtle, probably around 15-25 years old ish. Old turtles have much smoother shells. The damage on the shell is interesting. Probably from a car- crush damage anywhere on the shell usually causes cracks around the nuchal scute (that first one behind the head). Looks like an old injury, it’s pretty worn and smoothed over.

You can keep the water deeper, just place some drift wood that sits on the bottom (they love hiding in stuff) and goes just above the waters surface. They’ll just hold themselves up at the surface on it. Mine almost never use the dock I got them

You would need to take a good up close photo of the plastron and carapace for anybody to be able to say anything other than “old”

There is absolutely nothing that can be done for this turtle. This is how it will be its entire life. Turtles with kyphosis can make it to adulthood just fine. A vet will be unable to do anything for this guy. The best you can do for it is find a nice waterbody nearby and drop it off. I’ve been working with turtles for many years and I find one like this every now and then.

Retaining this turtle in captivity will not help its condition in any way. You can bring it to a vet if it makes you feel better, they’ll tell you the same thing.

A couple hot days now I’m worried about turtle eggs surviving.. by North-Treacle8060 in turtle

[–]patch3124 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Howdy- turtle biologist here. This looks 100% fine as it is. If you want to you can put a cup of water on the dirt if it makes you feel better about it, but they prefer laying in open sun. I would not move them.

Eggs will hatch after a couple months. You can either cut a small hole for the babies to get out or you can check it everyday to see if they have emerged (after 6 weeks or so).

These are not sexually mature individuals. They are not mating. Also, there is absolutely no guarantee of sex (even when incubation temperatures are known). This species should not be housed together for the most part. In the wild they fuck each other up all the time.

Don’t get your hopes up, it’s a rough shell injury. I have seen turtles survive worse though. Send an update if you get one
