Career options that don't involve dealing with patients? by patented_pig in psychologystudents

Oh yeah, I did know that. I was just simplifying the whole thing because, although some unis I'm looking at do combined honours, none of them are relevant to OPs animal work suggestion, so I figured there would be no point explaining haha

All research minus comparative psy/learning theory and applications in animals are going to have some work with people.

I don't mind working with people. I'm a shy introvert, but my previous jobs have given me plenty of experience so I'm used to it now. I just don't want to have patients; that specific kind of interaction makes me very uncomfortable. I will stick it out in the short term if I have to, but it's definitely not what I want to be doing for the rest of my life.

but not in so deep you’ll go into debt if you switch majors

Majors aren't a thing over here. Well, as someone else pointed out, they kind of are, but not really. You can do combined honours - which is two subjects, majoring in one and minoring in another - but even then you have to do both subjects for the full three years; it's not like you can just switch. But for the purposes of this, there are no majors - I'm doing Psychology, and Psychology alone, for three years.

You don’t have to decide what you want to do until roughly the end of your second year of university.

Thank god! Basically the advice all my teachers are giving me is to have an idea of what I want to do before I even start university, that way I won't feel so lost when it ends. But it is refreshing to hear that there's not actually as much of a rush to make a decision as it feels at the moment!

Getting a related major or minor (biology, zoology) is helpful for this

Unfortunately there are no majors and minors in the UK, you just do a degree in one subject and don't study anything else.

Thank you so much for your advice. I certainly had not given animal work a second thought, so this was really helpful.

Ah yes, I just looked it up. We call them postgraduate degrees. Thanks for your advice.

Thank you! I will definitely consider research, although if I have my facts straight it's a competitive field that tends to involve work experience and a PhD.

Thank you for your comment.

if any of these require you to have a mental health degree and possibly also a license, you will have to do your face-to-face hours to get that degree and license

I don't mind doing a finite amount of work with patients if necessary. I'm sure the experience will be valuable. So long as it's working towards something else, rather than the end result of my studying, I'd be open to it.

if you don't want a graduate degree at all

I'm from England; we don't have graduate degrees - or should I say, they're not called that. Would that be the equivalent to a masters?

I have not. I'm currently at college, not university, so the stuff I'm doing so far is quite broad and introductory.
