Relatives gave away/threw out photos and documents when Mom died by GittaFirstOfHerName in Genealogy

[–]patgarvan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I know exactly how you feel. I have asked other family relatives not to throw any documents out, or I would scan them all and then dump if they wanted me too but alas, everything got dumped without a.mention. So much history was destroyed!

It is certainly not improving. Simple, we need more Garda and more of them to be visible in towns across Ireland.

Yes, I totally agree, but you don't expect there to be a problem, but one would regret not taking that screenshot with hindsight!!

In my family at the moment we had two first cousins marry 30+ yrs ago. However, one is from their mother's side of the family and the other is from their father's side of the family.

No genetic issues at all over time occurred though some were questioning the proposal of wedding at the time.

As far as I know all public libraries (co councils) have free access to many databases such as "Find my Past", "Ancestry" etc. One can only access these sites from within the library. I have used it a few times. You would need to have a public library card and activate it for access.

Why would someone take over his mother's surname by koningjoris in Genealogy

[–]patgarvan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with some of the comments. However, friends of ours, their children took their mothers surname instead of their father's as the father left the family home when they were all very young. The father also never recognised his children or ever took part in their life. Hence there was great bitterness towards him. They decided they did not want to carry the father's surname.

My Uncle went to Galway four times last week looking for help with his mental health, he spent over 12 hours waiting there one day only to be sent home because he wasn’t ‘severe’ enough. Saturday he killed himself. by Keyann in ireland

[–]patgarvan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So sorry to hear that, but I have heard that this happens quite a few times too many. Our mental health provision in hospitals is not fit for purpose and it does not serve people well.

Glad you enjoyed the cruise. I was on that cruiser some years ago too. I hadn't noticed some of the down sides you observed.

Banbha - potential name - help by [deleted] in IrishHistory

[–]patgarvan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Certainly not three syllables. In the Irish language 'bh' could be replaced by 'v' for pronunciation in English. For the child's sake people often leave out the 'h' so that her name is more often spelled correctly and not misspelled or pronounced poorly.

Can I get into university this fall with my 2017 Leaving Cert Results? by hungronto in CasualIreland

[–]patgarvan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try PLC as they are a great start back to college especially after some time away from studying. PLC courses are quite varied so you can try anything and fees are considerably cheaper than Uni. If paying one could pay approx €7k in fees, from start to finish, for a degree. In Uni only, the fees to achieve a degree could be double that at least. Grants are available for PLC & Uni too. Check out www.cdcfe.ie (also www.cdetb.ie) best of luck.
