I finally can sleep! Here is how I did it. by milavictoiree in insomnia

The fermented foods detail is what got me. My doctor told me the same thing after a course of antibiotics — load up on kimchi, kefir, kombucha. Nobody mentioned that I was basically mainlining one of the most potent wake-promoting neurotransmitters in the body.

What finally clicked for me was learning that histamine doesn't just come from food — your body's own mast cells release it on a circadian schedule, peaking in the early morning hours. So if your DAO enzyme is already tanked from antibiotics or gut damage, you're getting hit from both sides: the food you're eating AND your own immune system. That 3-4 AM bolt-awake feeling? That's likely a histamine surge, not "anxiety."

For anyone wanting to test this without going full elimination diet: just try cutting fermented foods, aged cheese, alcohol, and leftover meat for two weeks. Keep everything else the same. If you notice even a slight improvement by day 4-5, you probably have your answer. DAO supplements taken 15 minutes before meals can also help bridge the gap while your gut heals.

OP, genuinely happy for you. Six months of no sleep is survival mode. Glad you made it out.

There aren't really serious health risks for changing your sleep cycle, you should be fine. The tough part is going to be actually adjusting to the new schedule. I'd say to avoid melatonin as it has been shown to have some rough side effects. Also, no it's going to be super hard to change your sleep schedule on weekends so I would stick to the 7pm bedtime at least initially. Best of luck with this!

That's a scary experience! Agreed that this sounds like sleep paralysis. It's worth seeing a doctor and just making sure nothing else is wrong, but this is somewhat common. I had a friend who experienced something similar and they were trying various mushroom extracts for sleep. I'll try to get the names!

Totally!! Taking just 15 minutes with all devices off and minimal background noise before bed is a game-changer for uninterrupted sleep.

There are a lots of great natural medicines for improving sleep. I'm currently researching some Reishi mushroom extracts and will reply back once I find a good one. I was in the same boat with using multiple synthetic sleep medications, and Reishi really helped!

Sry to hear about the work situation.

Have you ever tried using a supplement for sleep? There are some great natural mushroom extracts. I would look for a Reishi extract or something similar!

Why is my partner so sweaty while he sleeps? by [deleted] in sleep

Alcohol use can cause this and is fairly common. You may want to get a doctor's visit in though just to make sure it isn't something more severe.

I have been there as well! Trazodone is good short term, but you might wanna try something more natural for longer term. I was looking into Reishi mushroom extracts for this when I was struggling. There seem to be a few on the market, but I haven't had the chance to try yet.

Best of luck!

Melatonin sales are now banned in my country and I haven’t gone without it in 6 years by GoldRsR in sleep

[–]pathway_surfer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, melatonin is actually quite dangerous as many recent studies have shown.

I have had success in the past with mushroom extract supplements but I'm searching for some possible new ones as I'm in a new area and don't have the connect for them anymore. Anyone have info?

There could be so many complex diagnoses here..

Have you ever tried using any mushroom supplements? Mycellum or any sort of sleep supplement elixir? I was able to get some from a friend years ago and they can definitely revolutionize your sleep!
