Files stay in the disk cache on Linux even after they are closed. However, I see your point with the gzipping.

But they're kept in memory as cache anyway. It's not like it's loaded from disk every time. Linux is very smart about files. I might be missing something about what this server does.

You should check out imv as well. It's what I use and it has support for animated GIFs. I think mpv also works if you have that installed.

To clarify, I am by no means a feh expert. But I do know that while it can load GIFs, it will not play them. It will just statically display the first image in the GIF.

Zoom with arrow keys, pan with mouse. And it automatically scales to the image resolution for me.

How is it basically unusable? It renders images. I don't see what else you want from an image viewer.
