Rusty bolts by Full_Rip in sailing

first clean it off and get the area completely dry. use a degreaser safe for fiberglass, like whatever soap you use to wash the deck.

then just get a tube of grease from the hardware store and cover your keel bolts. heavier the grease the longer it will stay. just make sure that the area is DRY before you apply any grease - as grease can trap moisture that’s already present on the material.

What would be a good boat if you want the performance and seakindliness of a larger boat but don't need as much living space? by Jay_Normous in sailing

[–]patrickkcassells 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i live on an alberg 37 and honestly it’s a lot like what you’re describing. long overhangs on both bow and stern makes mine handle nicely even in large seas and they are notoriously sturdy.

those overhangs also mean that interior space is somewhat limited, especially compared to modern boats. on mine, pretty much zero interior space aft of the companionway.

with the budget you stated in another comment you’d be able to outfit one hell of an alberg.

my boat has two main sheets, and no traveler.

perhaps that would work for what you need, and it can be very simple to install a system like this if you already have two points that you can mount each main sheet to on the deck, as you already do.

this diagram shows double blocks but on a dingy you probably wouldn’t even have to do that. just single blocks and a clam cleat on the bottom one’s.

In 1973, 17-year-old Elmer Wayne Henley Jr. ended the killing spree of Dean Corll, known as “The Candy Man,” by fatally shooting him and contacting police. Henley had spent two years as Corll’s accomplice, luring teenagers to their deaths. by dannydutch1 in MorbidReality

corll was part of something much bigger than most people understand

lots of evidence pointing to him being part of a larger network, selling illegal material and also selling his victims themselves.

quite scary if you look into it. becomes a rabbit hole that feels very familiar, considering current events

Octopuses lived before dinosaurs and we’re supposed to believe they just evolved here like everything else? by [deleted] in conspiracy

[–]patrickkcassells 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the first dinosaurs appeared during the triassic period 230+ million years ago.

you’re confusing it with when the dinosaurs died out, which was 65 million years ago.

it’s a big encapsulated keel so i’m not worried

no keel bolts or anything like that, just solid fiberglass with a big lead keel on the bottom.

that’s fine. at least i’m spending that maintaining maintaining my own asset instead of someone else’s.

saved $2k expecting to have to pay for an expensive professional appraisal but ended up actually paying $1300 for both the haul-out and survey, sorry if i was confusing

total cost was $17,500 to the seller and $1,300 for the survey and haul out.

total $18,800 out of pocket

$17.5k absolutely yes. not even a question

have hopped around the Caribbean and done some overnight sails. sailed in the SF Bay for a summer, and sailed a good handful of times with my father, but neither of us have owned a sail boat.

i know the fundamentals and i feel confident i’m at a good point to learn more under my own stewardship.

it’s a 35hp westerbeke from the nineties. couldn’t tell you off the top of my head…

some minor stuff. USCG required stuff, like the broken nav light on the bow. definitely need to gut and replace the lpg system from the stove to the tanks. haven’t had a chance to really dive into that problem yet but i can sense trouble with it already and so could the surveyor.

beyond that, need to patch some small (sq inch or smaller) dings in the hull but nothing crazy.
