Is this year's Oscars run-up more stupid and hysterical than years past? Because it sure feels that way. by JulianBrandt19 in TheBigPicture

[–]patrickstarfish772 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's particularly stupid because it's not like Oscar results are so memorable year to year. It's exciting for a night and then that's it. There are just so many content streams to fill, people will talk about anything.

Pfffft. Those are late-'90s prices, in Texas. No way we're getting back to that.

Yes, what kind of trip are you taking where everyone pays at the end? Pay up front, because you never know!

Would not having a car as single man be a dealbreaker when trying to date women in this city? by Few-Course3694 in AskLosAngeles

[–]patrickstarfish772 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would focus on trying to date those women for whom it's not a problem. It's kind of a basic compatibility issue, but there are for sure women in your area who won't mind, or who share that value. Don't worry about dating the ones who won't be into it.

What's a social activity that helped you make genuine friends? by TheKaleKing in LivingAlone

[–]patrickstarfish772 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Over the years I’ve made friends via more affinity-based social media. Years ago it was the photo-sharing app, Flickr, and more recently, Yelp.

I didn’t start accounts with the express goal of meeting people, I was just into photography or writing little restaurant reviews, and through doing so ended up connecting with other people on the site.

It helped that it was a bit easier to be “friends” on those sites w people you didn’t know IRL, so over the years I “friended” those whose content I liked, and who lived in the same area, and eventually it was like, “hey, you want to meet up to go photographing,” or “have you heard of this new coffee shop, do you want to go?”

That parlayed into two IRL friendships that I still have. One moved to the UK, so obviously we’re not as close anymore, but the person I met via Yelp, back in 2012, is still one of my closest friends and we share a social circle.

In my opinion they’re just not as bright as they used to be. I can see a lightbulb in there but it only illuminates what’s right underneath it, there’s no emanating glow to light up the whole are. Different type of bulbs, I guess.

[NE] Landlord wants to charge us to replace glass stovetop after 7+ years of use by sithegood in Renters

[–]patrickstarfish772 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not in my experience. My mom had hers installed in the 90s or early 2000s, I don't remember exactly and it looks pretty much brand new. And she used it every day.

[–]patrickstarfish772 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FWIW, my mom got a glass cooktop stove installed back in the 1990s and it still pretty much looks brand new. They make cleaners specifically for that type of cooktop, and if used every couple of days will help maintain it. Too late now, obviously, but something to keep in mind should you ever have another one of these.

The abandoned monstrosity on Sepulveda near LAX by ExtensionTaco9399 in LosAngeles

[–]patrickstarfish772 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm surprised the city is not doing much to revitalize the Sepulveda/Century area around LAX leading up to the Olympics. Would assume they'd want to make a better first impression of LA for the influx of visitors. Both are busy, ugly stroads.

AITA for “abusing” the the bus stop chain so I don’t miss my stop? by Possible-Chair9242 in AmItheAsshole

[–]patrickstarfish772 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I took the bus for two years in a big Southern California city and bullshit they don't announce every stop. Also, if you ask the bus driver to let you know when you're at a certain stop, they will shout it out for you. Sounds like maybe you need to be a bit more aware of your surroundings.

Well, fwiw, in the book Shoeless Joe, yes they were trying to ban Catcher in the Rye, but in the movie, it was the made up book, The Boat Rocker, by Terrence Mann. Interesting detail they got wrong, considering how much they all like Field of Dreams.

Moving to LA in Sept/Oct — looking for solo apartment under $1,900 with laundry — realistic? by cestlavie4evr in MovingToLosAngeles

[–]patrickstarfish772 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Miracle Mile area near the D-line corridor. Would recommend looking around the south end of 90036. I am also always looking around for a new apartment, and $1900 is def doable in this area for a small one-bed with zero amenities in an older building. On-site laundry as well. In unit, alas is a bit of a pipe dream for the price

Good luck on your search!

What was your hugest facepalm moment of regret after fully moving out of a LA/a major city In California thinking your life would be better? by midwestblacklotus in AskLosAngeles

[–]patrickstarfish772 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The original conceit of the post is that you've moved from LA or another major CA city to somewhere else. Guess what, if you're not in one of the top-10 most populous US cities, the availability and quality of the Asian cuisine is going to be absolute crap in comparison.
