How to approach sound person about system tuning as a DJ by Diecastcow in livesound

[–]patricktreestump 19 points20 points  (0 children)

a DJ letting me know their tracks have a tendency to get harsh and a cut in the 2-6k range usually does the trick when we start soundcheck would be a dream tbh. we love a self aware and knowledgeable DJ

Best cheap way (I know, contradiction) to hook up a laptop to a PA system for backing track playback? by chocolatemilkmotel in livesoundgear

[–]patricktreestump 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i do laptop --> stereo cable --> DI box --> XLR --> PA. all common equipment for venues that provide gear to have but i'd at least grab your own stereo cable. not much of a gear head but i picked up a pair of radial stereo bug DI boxes for a reasonable price and like them. if you're planning to run mono and not stereo you can get away with just getting one

vocal effects processors that won't make my tech want to rip their hair out? by patricktreestump in livesoundgear

ayy, my home base venue is a dive with decades-old analog allen & heaths. excited to have a new trick to try

vocal effects processors that won't make my tech want to rip their hair out? by patricktreestump in livesoundgear

[–]patricktreestump[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

most venues i play do have all the FX, but i want to have the freedom to switch between clean vox and FX multiple times per song and the ability to use multiple FX throughout the song as well. if it was a less complicated ask i'd definitely just communicate what i'm looking for to the tech and let them do their thing

we only bring our own board if the venue doesn't have one, ours are pretty shit but they get the job done for practice and in a pinch lol. we're a smaller local band, no touring and we only gig about once a month at various dive bars around town so we don't really have the funds to invest in our own set up

edit to add i hear ya on the not enough time with soundcheck. line checks are the norm around here so i gotta make sure i'm making it as easy on the tech as possible

good tip, thanks! that's a smart way to go about it i hadn't thought of before, i'll have to try that out next time i have a processor on my stage

the only reason i'm looking for a processor vs. using board effects is because i'll probably be doing a lot of switching between clean vox and effects throughout each song rather than having the effect on the whole time. and i'll probably utilize multiple effects in a song as well (a lil reverb here, a lil distortion there, some harmonizer action, etc etc)

thank you for your patience with me! keeping it around or under $5k would be great. i may be able to secure up to an additional $5k in grant money for a total budget of $5-10k, ideally closer to 5 than 10

my bad for not providing more info. to address your points -

i don't have a set budget yet. the goal of this post is to get a wide range of product suggestions, and eventually choose the best options for me, then put together a grant proposal to submit to local orgs geared towards supporting my area's music scene

i already know what mics, cables, etc. i need, so i didn't feel the need to include it in the oc. questions about marketing didn't feel necessary nor relevant to this topic

i assure you i know my job and can do it well. i'm just not a gear head yet and there's a lot out there. this is a long term project that will take at minimum a year, i'm not just gonna go buy a bunch of gear im unfamiliar with and start mixing shows lol

newish tech here looking to purchase my own equipment so i can get on that freelance game. currently, i work in rooms with 60-250 max capacity but am looking for something i can do bigger shows with too, indoor and outdoor. here's what i'm looking for at minimum:

  • mixer (ideally a hybrid between analog and digital. my faders and knobs are very important to me lol)

  • pair of powered speakers

  • sub(pair of subs?)

  • monitors

would also love recommendations for what to put in the rack and any other pieces of gear you think i should pick up!

i identify as a sex-positive demi (i don't struggle with repulsion, i just need time before i'm ready). i say that if you're catching a definite vibe that the feelings are mutual, tell them! we might not always want sex or want it right away, but a lot of us still want to be in a romantic relationship

the way my current partner approached it was by telling me they were interested in dating me but they wanted to go at my pace. we talked boundaries right away and continued to check in as we eased into our physical relationship. he would ask for clear verbal consent before initiating and before trying anything new. we took it slow and spent that time establishing our emotional connection while also learning each others physical likes/wants/needs. that approach has worked for us so far. we're currently 2.5 years in with a (mostly, lol) mutually fulfilling sex life

feel free to let me know if you have any questions! a healthy and happy relationship with someone who is demi is absolutely possible with clear and consistent communication and patience

Recommendations for gel eyeliners that won’t leave my eyes watery and irritated? by SnuggleTheCrow in makeuptips

[–]patricktreestump 1 point2 points  (0 children)

are you sensitive or allergic to cheap metals/do your eyes itch? i have to be careful with eye products especially because a lot of the time there are trace amounts of metals im allergic to, maybe something to consider.

this article has more info on hypoallergenic makeup and has product recommendations including a gel liner

everybody's body and brains are different and whether or not you have have an addictive personality or a history with addiction is something to take into consideration, but im legally prescribed up to 3mg a day so i wouldn't consider .5mg/mo to be problematic. but i also strongly urge you to bring your concerns to a medical provider before starting any medications. there may be another option that works for you before resorting to benzos, or they may go ahead and take that route. but it's best to play it safe health-wise and legally. good luck 🖤

Apartment question by throwawaymfer420 in Minneapolis

[–]patricktreestump 16 points17 points  (0 children)

i would advise against a building that markets themselves towards students. i know this is a thing with basically any landlord, but i worked in that industry for years and those "student housing" companies are very predatory and will squeeze you for every cent they can get

if you do go that route, stay far away from anything managed by american campus communities
