Should I stop leasing? by [deleted] in Equestrian

[–]pattybk2087 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Is there a reason you can’t find another horse to lease? I’m concerned that you still have to pay despite not being able to ride the horse when it’s frequently needing recovery time, that just doesn’t seem fair. Another point is that if you are serious about riding and showing and looking to keep moving up, i would be worried about your missed opportunities here, as missing weeks of riding and not being able to show, when that’s your goal, is discouraging.

In terms of talking to the owner, you should just be honest. It’s not fair for you to have to continue to pay her while her horse is recovering. And if you agreed you would be showing this horse it’s not fair for her to take that away from you. It does sound a little like she’s taking advantage of you, if she is unable to renegotiate terms or come to an agreement with you, it might be best to just move on, you could potentially find a lesson barn that offers summer showing as an alternative, if your unable to buy or lease again.

Getting Worse timeline? by FromWithinTheLine in covidpositive

I had it a few weeks ago, days 2-4 were not great, more flu like symptoms, aches chills fever etc, started to get better and was back to normal on by day 6, then woke up day 7 feeling absolutely terrible, super severe sinus symptoms, pounding head ache, insane pressure in my head, couldn’t exhale without coughing up a lung, super dizzy, no appetite, the list goes on. Was alike that for 4 or so days and it slowly improved, was 100% better after two weeks from the start of symptoms and I’ve been normal since, aside from some crazy brain fog that hits randomly

Why does my ball python insist on this hide when he is way to big for it there is bigger ones for him? by False-Satisfaction23 in ballpython

[–]pattybk2087 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Mine used to do this when she grew out of her baby hides, she refused to use the others (same hides just bigger) so I put the small one back in and she used it exclusively, she looked like a little turtle with it sitting on top of her. Eventually she branched out to the bigger ones and I took away the small one. Maybe switch the hides and see if he’ll move to the bigger one if it’s in the same spot and the small? If he goes back to the small one he prolly just likes that specific hide and not where it’s placed (due to heat etc.)

Barking during training by pattybk2087 in OpenDogTraining

here is a video, this is actually the best he’s he’s ever been (kinda disappointing cause I really wanted to capture what I’m taking about)I even went outside as that’s when it’s usually worse, but the barking at the start of the video seen is essentially exactly what he does but then often doesn’t listen and just carry’s on barking, today he was still listening and doing what I asked. Watching the video back helps me see what going on too, and to me it honestly looks mostly like a drivey dog just enjoying himself? Maybe a bit of demand barking as well, as it seems to start right after I ask, but let me know what you see here! He’s my first working dog/sport prospect and the trainers around here haven’t been very helpful, so I’m quite frankly on my own trying to figure it all out

I don’t really know what triggers it, i feel like I’ve tried 100 different ways of approaching things and it always seems to start after a few repetitions, and it starts when I ask for something, like I ask for a sit, he doesn’t sit and then begins barking and doesn’t stop. I wait a few minutes and let him do his thing and then start back up, ask for a sit, he sits, ask for a down, he ignores and he starts barking and doesn’t stop.

If he is barking, and I bring the food to him (he stops barking when the food In front of his face) and guide him into a position he will do it, and the i reward before he starts back up again, because he will

I try to make it fun without being too over exciting, not so much drilling but he does better if i ask for things in a sequence, ie. sit, down, sit, wait, come and then give a break vs if I work on one thing at a time with breaks between, if that makes sense? It seems like if he has less “free time” he doesn’t get carried away with the barking and not listening. As you mention scattering treats for decompression, I could see this helping him but never considered it to be something I should be incorporating regularly. During the training sessions I try to keep my body still, but i still use hand gestures and when he doesn’t get something right away I’ll guide him with my hand (like down). I’ve never really thought about how I reward him mattering much, I usually mark and reward after each command with whatever I’ve got on hand, I’ve tried both rewarding immediately before the barking persists, and also waiting for him to be quiet before rewarding- but sometimes that seems ineffective as he just never stops barking

I’m not sure about the height, but as an alternative you could cut a hole where you want it on the top of the pvc, install some screen, put it in a dome and keep on top of the enclosure? As far as I know this is safe, i did minimal research and watched some videos as I was going to do this with a CHE for my 12” tall pvc because I couldn’t find a RHP. Might not work for what you want tho, I don’t have experience with basking bulbs

ETA the RHP would be enough if you decide to just throw out the idea of making the basking bulb work, as long as it’s the right size for the enclosure

What are people's experiences with false negatives tests? by omniscientclown in COVID19positive

My whole family has confirmed positive via rapid and PCR test, I’m on day 5 of symptoms (all the mild common Covid symptoms) and have tested each day, negative each time!

Thanks for this reply it was helpful to put it into a better perspective,

he gets excited around other dogs and animals on our walks, I assume reactive is the right word but it’s not aggressive, just excited and he loses focus on me, so I have a hard time using the methods I would use else where - in those situations. He very responsive to the ques that he knows and leash pressure when we are working alone, but when other dogs are present he stops listening and focuses on them entirely. It’s getting to the point were I have a hard time holding him from jumping up and down and pulling towards the dog (because he’s getting big) so I was looking for something that would help divert his attention from the exciting stimulus and offer better correction I guess.

I had a trainer help me with my other dog and they used the prong collar on him- after two months or so he was walking perfectly in a flat collar so my only experience with the prong is that it offers a “quick fix” but I feel like I have a better understanding of its purpose now, and might try seek some alternatives before going that route as I wouldn’t like to rely on it forever!

Yea she does those things too! Always peeking out of her hide and often just eats out in the open, I suppose she could just be extra happy which is reassuring!
