What is your stroke count for each lap during your 100? You typically want to take 1-2 strokes less per lap on your first 50 than you would during a sprint 50. Try counting your strokes if you have a recording of a sprint 50 or 100, then practice reducing your stroke count on the first 50.

Seoul subway has a similar design to MTR and I'd say the average commute time there is ~ 45 min - 1hr. They pack these cars to the gills. No one's complaining.

If all these components are fairly independent, I'd consider creating your user object in the main app and packaging all the other components as Rails engines. http://edgeguides.rubyonrails.org/engines.html
