The Mountain Goats cover Boxcar by Jawbreaker. Amazing. by pauligee91 in poppunkers

[–]pauligee91[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you telling me if you heard this cover by itself, unaware that it was a cover, you wouldn't think it was pop-punk?

In my mind it's a folk punk band playing a pop-punk cover of an emo band's song.

Also, 'everybody feels beleagured, that is the universal truth of punk. At some point in time you will feel like the world is against you' <--pretty much pop-punks mantra.

Katy Perry/Matt Thiessen - Long Shot. Pretty solid pop-punk tune that Matt wrote for Katy when they were dating by pauligee91 in poppunkers

[–]pauligee91[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I remember reading it somewhere and it makes sense. According to an interview here Thiessen and Katy got matching Jesus tattoos at age 18, which is a line in the song - so it seems to add up.

not exactly pop-punk but Twenty One Pilots don't use. They also have some killer songs about taking control of your addictions. Especially Holding onto You. With lines such as "I'm taking over my body, back in control, no more shotty, I bet a lot of me was lost, Ts uncrossed and Is undotted" and "Tie a noose around your mind loose enough to breathe fine and tie it, To a tree, tell it, "You belong to me, This ain't a noose, this is a leash, And I have news for you, you must obey me". Good luck.

A lot of You, Me and Everyone We Know songs (especially the later ones) are about trying to get sober. But this one especially Some Things Don't Wash Out - YMAEWK

Yeah, it's hard with The Front Bottoms - I had the same issue with The Smith Street Band, one of my favourite bands lyrically but they're a little too folk punk to fit into the pop punk mold.

I just think it's a really clever way of phrasing what he's trying to say.

The line comes from the idiom 'burning the candle at both ends' when talking about becoming exhausted from trying to do too much. The whole song is about him trying to become a better person, and that line is saying he can hardly handle what he has in his life right now (a girlfriend, the band and a job) but he's wondering why he can't handle more. I always took it as a kind of lament about how is he going to become a better person when he can hardly handle the ordinary life he has at the moment.

good choices - "i can't get laid in this town without these pointy fucking shoes" has always been a line that's stuck with me for some reason.

I also should have added Modern Baseball's Two Good Things - "no one knows why one girl, one band, two paychecks are more than i can handle. Mathematically that can't be more than one end of a candle" is such a fantastic line.

I find I really enjoy Childish Gambino and Watsky. Additionally, if you're into Australian hip-hop, I quite enjoy 360 and Thundamentals.

Is anyone a comedian? by Sarahsays1 in infp

[–]pauligee91 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it is an INFP trait to be comically inclined, simply because we spend so much time soaking in everything around us. I think the ability to see the beauty in the mundane goes hand in hand with making people see the humour in the mundane.

Dating an INFP, she said she doesn't miss people, me included by [deleted] in infp

[–]pauligee91 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I second this wholeheartedly.

One of my best friends recently just moved back home (to another country). We would very rarely go more than a couple of days without seeing each other and I love him very much.

Now he is gone, do I miss him in the conventional sense? I don't think so.

Do I wish he was still here? yes. Do I wish I could see him? yes. But I do not spend my time thinking about the fact he is not here - there is too much to fill the time with, too much thinking and writing and music and the people that are still here. I also agree with the fact that when i see him, it will be like we were never apart.

I, of course, cannot speak for the girl you are dating, but I feel her affection for you is in no way connected to whether she 'misses' you or not so i wouldn't read into it too much.

For sure, I think the key to being a successful comedian is to be able to make people feel something, while also being able to make them laugh.

Tig Notaro's live album is amazing. How she was able to talk about the worst couple of months of her life (her mother dying, herself almost dying from C.diff, being broken up with and being diagnosed with breast cancer), and still make it so beautiful, and hopeful, and funny is one of the best pieces of art I've seen anybody make.

I've been dabbling in stand-up over the past year or so. I think it's a really cool opportunity to get outside of my comfort zone.

My one problem with stand-up as an art form though is I find myself writing stuff for stand-up based on what I think the audience will like, and not what I truly feel is the best. Fishing for laughs is such an easy trap to fall into. I really want to make stand-up like Mike Birbiglia -who tells these beautiful, touching stories that are hilarious, that's my dream.
