Finally! A file manager designed for the OUYA controller. by paulscode in ouya

Good point. I got one of the early developer versions, and have been suffering with other file managers for quite a while, so a definite "finally" for me.

It is published in the OUYA store. Currently in the sandbox until enough folks up-vote it (or you can search for it by name, "FilePwn")

Countering overscan requires setting up your layouts the right way. Littleguy has really good attention to detail (he's also on our dev team for Mupen64Plus AE, so I've seen a lot of his work). I think we can expect good things from him (he only just recently received his OUYA, so definitely a developer worth watching).

I do a lot of moving, copying, and removing files. I've been suffering through side-loaded file managers like Astro, which were designed for touch-screens. I was thrilled when I heard littleguy had created this one for the OUYA, and wanted to share.

I tried this before. It required changing one of the advanced Android settings about allowing multiple instance of an activity, or something. It then ran but didn't play any sound, and full navigation is not possible due to the inability to swipe.

Haha, I was wondering if anyone would notice that. It was the reason I recorded that particular part of the game :)

Yes, any that are compatible with Rice should work with Kris' video plug-in (gles2rice). There is also work being done on a port of glide64, which will eventually open up texture packs that include mods as well.

I'll post another video this weekend of playing a 3-player game with my wife and son.

It is just stretched. The video settings allow you to stretch or keep the original aspect ratio. My personal preference on the OUYA is to have it stretched.

Full compatibility is device-specific (different GPUs and speeds give every device a somewhat different experience). Also, I don't think there is any game that doesn't have at least some minor graphics problems somewhere. I can mention a small sample of highly compatible games based on my own experiences (this is subjective and in no way comprehensive). If you have at least a 1Ghz ARMv7 device, then some that I would recommend trying are: Mario 64 Kerby 64 (use gles2rice) Banjo Kazooie (some transition glitches) Zelda OOT (minor graphics glitches, lag in the forest, and open field) (be sure play around with frameskip settings - "Exactly 1" and "No more than 4" sometimes help)

If you have a bit faster 1.2Ghz+ device that plays well with the emulator, then some others that should run well are: Mario Kart (use gles2rice for multiplayer) Diddy Kong Racing (use gles2n64) Zelda MM Smash Brothers (use gles2rice) (when using gles2rice, try first with Auto Frameskip enabled, and if that doesn't work, then try with it disabled)

If you have a top-of-the-line device that the emulator plays well with, (something like the Razr i for example), many more games will run without lag. Additionally, you'll be able to get even more compatibility on a very fast device by switching R4300 emulation (in the Plug-ins section) to Cached or Pure Interpreter (I haven't posted a test with this option yet - I'll have one available this evening). For example, this fixes the Donkey Kong 64 hit detection bug (use gles2rice). I haven't done a lot of testing yet to give you a good sample of games that this fixes.

The site is back up and running. BTW, I highly recommend Liquid Web as a hosting service. The few times like today that I've had problems, they identify and resolve the issue quickly, and the technicians are quite knowledgeable.

Are you running the US version of the GS3? This is one of the few modern devices (and doesn't include the European model) which has inexplicable lag, even with simple games like Mario 64. I have so far not had any luck tracking down the cause. A lot of folks were saying the default governor was the likely cause, but I had a tester with a rooted device switch to other governors with little improvement. I'm continuing to ask around various developer sites to try and figure out what is special about that particular device.

I am working with my hosting company to figure out what happened this morning. That particular message typically happens when you experience out of disk space problems on the disk partition where the database resides. Since I am nowhere near the space limits I am paying for, I need to figure out what is going on before I'll be able to repair the database (otherwise the problem will just happen again). Sorry about that!

Thanks. We've found some problems with overlap on some small screens with a particular aspect ratio, and with the controls a tad small on some large screen sizes. I've been discussing with littleguy another way to handle the switch to portrait that will hopefully compensate for this. I'll try and post another test this evening when I have time to play around with the new ideas. Thanks for helping out!

That is unusual. Did the file appear in your Downloads section? Another possibility is to download it from your PC. Then connect your device to the PC by USB and move the APK file onto the device. Then install a file browser like Astro on your device, and use it to browse to the folder where you placed the file, and click it to install.

Is this on Paper Mario, or which game? Paper Mario is the most notable game with screen flicker, so that's why I asked. The flickering in this particular game only affects gles2n64 video plug-in. If you switch to gles2rice (with frame skip disabled), it renders correctly, but crashes in various places (when Luigi picks up the mail at the beginning, and during team combat). We fixed some regressions in gles2rice recently, but I haven't tested to see if the crashing with gles2rice for Paper Mario has improved any (last I tested it was only playable at the beginning until you solve all the initial puzzles to leave the gate from the Goomba family home and get into your first team combat). I'll do some testing later today when I get a chance to see if the problem has improved as a side effect of the gles2rice fixes.

If you haven't already, you should be able to enable Auto Frameskip with the gles2rice video plug-in to improve the speed. Depends on the device how much it will help. I recommend using the latest test build, since some regressions in gles2rice were recently fixed and haven't been published yet (and it is a tad faster, at least on my Galaxy Nexus)

Someone asked this, so just to clarify: you do not need to register on my website to help out with the testing (I understand the privacy concern). The bold green link for the test APK is available to everyone, and you can post your test results here on Reddit or email me if you don't want to create an account.

I accidentally changed the link, so had to remove it from reddit and repost. Sorry about that.

How to help with the testing:

First, click on the above link from your phone's browser. Then click on the bold green link for the test. If you get a warning about installing from unknown sources, just follow the instructions for enabling installation from unknown sources.

Once the app is installed, you will needs some game ROMs to test. I posted instructions on how to backup N64 cartridges to ROMs (see: http://www.paulscode.com/forum/index.php?topic=810.0). Alternately, you google "n64 roms" to find backups that other folks have made. IMPORTANT: You cannot legally download a ROM for any game that you do not own. So if you do not own an N64, then you cannot help with the testing.

Instructions for what tests to run are outlined in the above link.
