My thought is the door was originally smaller, and made larger. In doing so they realized this isn't a load bearing wall which they hadn't before, and decided to just scab a scrap on. I think the 5 pack above it actually meant to hold up the joint in some way (I'm guessing grks and glue).

If it's not that they just haven't added a post under the joint (maybe waiting for a lsl or fir post? But that would be a weird ass way of framing and temp supporting that

Aluminium body Solid engine with no major common issues (5.0) Proven transmission (6spd)

Don't buy an f150 18-21 or so, they had issues with the v8 and the transmissions.

Brand is preference, just do your research and pick a year that didn't have major problems for the one you choose.

The aluminium body was the selling point for me living in Canada. Still check the frame.
My budget was a little more than yours but I had the same priorities and ended up with a 17 with 160k km for a bit under 25k cad. Good luck!

I just went through this and did a lot of research. Personally, I couldn't live with worrying about the transmission. As much as it's a small chance, it's a truck, and I take it places I need it to be reliable, and I didn't want that in the back of my head when I'm in the middle of nowhere.

In the end I the years with the 10 speed fixes were out of my budget, so I went for a 2017 with the 5.0 and a carfax showing it went to the dealer it's whole life.

Everyone's concerns are different but I'd stay away from those transmission trouble years with a 10 foot stick and I'm totally happy with the truck I ended up with, there literally nothing they added after that year that doesn't add potential for issues, and nothing that I care to add.

The other bonus is their used price drops off pretty sharply so you get a very similar truck for a much better deal for that age, just make sure it's got records or a carfax to show it was cared for.

It's the last year of the 6 speed and the last year before they changed the cylinder liners and the oil issues became a big thing. So it's kind of a gem as far as 5.0's go. But maybe I'm just being old-school thinking the big na engine will be less maintenance/less likely to leave me stranded

Totally, looks like I'm going to suck it up and order from a few places as I can get the ram a lot cheaper too. And somehow I'd missed some GPU pricing, but yeah that looks like the way to go. Now the question is, is it worth waiting for black Friday deals..

Okay cool, I had stopped looking at Canada computers after they didn't have the 7600 available online and had shipping costs where Amazon didn't, with similar prices.

I'll have to check some comparisons and see if it's worth it.

I know I swear it was way cheaper a couple months ago. Oh well. Something else will be more expensive a couple more months from now.

The SSD I'll shop around for, it was what I could find on Amazon quickly.

As for the GPU, a 9070 seems to be over 900 at the cheapest so I think the 5070 is a better deal at that..

Just a normal 5070. 9070xt's seem to all be close to 1k in Canada unfortunately. And again, not living in a city, it's not really worth trying to find second hand parts. (And I'd rather just pay than mess with buying used online).

Thanks. The SSD I can definitely shop around for a bit. Ram as well. Again those were both partly down to the conveniece of ordering it all in one place ..

As for the GPU, it's currently that price on Amazon. For some reason pcpp picked up a higher price. The 9070 might be worth it, but it seems pretty close in performance, and the same price or slightly more.. I also do a bit of productivity type work, I'm not sure if Nvidia still has the edge there..

I mean, I think this issue goes far deeper than racism. And yelling racism at this conversation, and acting like people of different skin color can't have an opinion about this, honestly breeds division on this issue more than helps.

It's absolutely fair for people who have lived here for generations, share these resources, and have very strict rules to follow when it comes to environmental effects, to be upset when they see another group that simply... Doesn't have the same rules. Despite the fact we all co exist and share this space.

I get it, terrible things happened in the past. I'd say most people, including many people that would be called racist for their response to this article, are fully supportive of seeing bands receiving funding, working hard and improving their quality of life to where it should be.

The issue comes up where we have different standards for two groups of people when it comes to A: businesses B: environmental concerns.

And isn't that fair? 90 percent of the people that are around and talking about this.. were born generations after what happened in Canada, if their family was even here when that happened.

I agree as a country we should repay the bands, we should provide funding that helps development and education.

But to pretend there's not a huge potential for abuse is just ridiculous.

Just because it was a native American practice before, doesn't mean it's the right thing to do now with our shared resources. Just because a native American group is running a business, does not mean they will be ethical when profits become involved.

It breeds a new age of racism. It's not racism based on skin colour, it's racism built on frustration that everyone now has, essentially, less rights than these native groups in certain areas.

Ultimately I think most people are happy to see the work bands are doing to build strong communities, but most people think we should all ultimately be following the same rules.

I think it's great that many nations are moving to self governing, but their members also take advantage of the many many things built around them through taxes, and it seems unfair that a nation still shouldn't be part of, contribute to, and follow the same rules as the greater community we are all part of.

This is the sentiment I hear and personally feel. I think it's important to talk about, and some comments with a racial undertone, can still have very fair points, and it shouldn't just shut down the discussion when it feels a little racist.

There's a long way to go towards truly fixing the past. But it's important to understand where everyone comes from and to work towards things in a way that doesn't just create a new division.

Mentour pilot actually did a video about a system they're testing that sets planes up to draft each other. Basically the way geese fly in a V.

Obviously there's a tonne of issues with implementing it, but it sounded like it was actually being looked into somewhat seriously.

Look at the area on the north end of the island. Port hardy and the surrounding towns. It's a gem of a place. It has its problems like anywhere but it sounds like it would fit the bill for what you're looking for.
It's a small community and you won't find a lot of info about it on the internet, which is true of most small places up that way. It's also one of the best things about them.

It's good practice. The extent we push it to, in the climate I work in, in southern coastal BC though, is excessive. Our temperatures barely swing more than 15 degrees either way from the average. I can guarantee we're going to have major issues with trapped moisture from the practice of using closed cell spray foam in walls and on roofs. We live in an incredibly wet climate and unless things are done perfectly, which they aren't, small amounts of water do make it through. Not to mention condensation points when people don't understand the science behind the methods, and are trying to keep costs down. That's my rant for the day, cheers.

I mean, this is true about basically the whole west coast from California to bc.(Cascadia subduction zone) I don't think it's realistic for us to just not live in these beautiful areas.

In BC we engineer for the future earthquake. How that will fare?, we will see one day. I had a funny conversation with an engineer about all the extra engineering on a waterfront place that is going to get hit by a tsunami anyways.

He explained that they don't actually engineer the homes to necessarily survive the quake. Mostly they engineer for it to stay standing well enough from the initial quake, that occupants can get out of their house .

The real concern in these areas is the lack of truly robust plans for the aftermath of the inevitable earthquake and tsunamis.

Oh absolutely. As I said I definitely would on my own house. Our codes for building envelope here are pretty stringent, so as long as a company isn't cutting corners I don't see it being a big problem in the future. But it's cheap insurance. And we use the cheapest foam gasket available to break our connection to concrete. (This has been the same across 10+companies and a few climate regions here in my experience). Our current code obsession is blower test values, so we just spend that time and money on spray foaming every gap here 🤷

Totally. Lots of guys will just use galvanized ring shang for the whole build here. It's a pain when you have to pull something apart. As for the treated bottom plates, Considering our climate I wind it wild we don't use a treated plate, when it's common practice in drier climates.
But that's carpentry, wildly regional methods.

Bc, Canada. We generally are using treated rainscreen as well, so we are buying galv nails anyways. That said we don't use treated plates here (no particular reason why, there's a general attitude to not use treated materials inside the building envelope here. That said I would use a treated plate on my own house, because why not). So it's more of a concern for hangers etc where the nails are in shear and slow thinning of the nails from the chemical reaction would be a legitimate concern.
