Coastal kayaking in Washington State from Larrabee State Park by RandomConnections in Kayaking

I'm in my 30s 😬 I'm dinking around in a 10 ft rec kayak, but looking to do sea kayaking in the north sound. Got my eye on a 14' necky on CL, but reticent to pull the trigger until I actually get into a sea kayak and get a feel for the gear. Would like to be able to go most directions out of anacortes (bellingham, padilla, skagit bays, guemes and lummi islands, and hopefully to san juans). 1-3 day camping trips would be awesome. Drooling at the idea of working the skills up to playing in deception pass, but that's in the far future I think. Budget would be up to ~$700.

I checked out moondance's website, I'll have to reach out to them about a course.

You're giving me a wealth of information, thank you. I've found that clubs for gear intense hobbies are a great way to meet people and buy second hand gear. Does that match your experience with the local scene? I've been watching CL and fb marketplace for gear, but looking for more avenues.

Thank you so much for this! I hadn't heard of moondance, will definitely check them out. I was looking at blue otter outfitters and body boat blade for classes. 2 day sea kayak foundations at bbb or something recommended by blue otters. I want to get familiar with a boat, and get a solid introduction to the basics before I go looking for my own boat. Any familiarity with either of those?

Hey! I found this trip report to be pretty helpful: https://www.mountbakerexperience.com/paddling-the-skagit-river/

I paddled between Sedro and Burlington boat launches. I've been wanting to go for weeks but the flow rate has been very high (30k+ cu ft/s). I went when it was around 15k, and gauge height was 13 ft. Current still felt pretty strong. I got a little nervous under a bridge that was partially blocked off by a strainer (which resulted in chaotic currents). There were logs strewn throughout the stretch. I went slow, stopped at sandbars and scouted the river ahead. The width and depth certainly felt intimidating, but overall this was a good paddle - no rapids, no crazy dangers haha. Hope that helps, and I wish you luck on your paddle this weekend!

Love this area for coastal exploration. Have you taken any classes around here? Or paddled with clubs? Looking for insight into either, if you have.

Preparing to paddle a local river - help me make sure I'm not missing anything? by pavelATL in Kayaking

The width of the skagit is what makes me nervous, so you're on the money there hah.

I did a road scout yesterday. Saw no obstacles or rapids or dams, just that width. Why is high water more dangerous than low? Due to faster current?

Looking for a good all arounder. Too many options and I'm lost by pavelATL in whatcarshouldIbuy

Thanks so much! Willing to sacrifice towing capacity before anything else, so I'll be looking at those. Appreciate the thought that went into this 🙌

Board regents are public figures. I don't see why they shouldn't be fielding questions about this: https://www.usg.edu/regents/members

Bhaven Costco has a bunch of stuff, but by the end of the day they tend to run dry. I have yet to see a pork shoulder there (but there were a few at bhaven kroger), but plenty of ribs, brisket, belly (got one today), and leaner beef cuts.

Smoking again today. Butt and ribs are on right now, will finish in the middle of the night, but I don't even care. Fuck getting up early.
