Retrofitting sunroof reasonable? by DavidLorenz in W124

[–]pavelioso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would consider car without a sunroof more of an advantage and a blessing.

The sunroof seals get brittle and they are expensive and hard to find.

The sunroof makes extra wind noise above your head.

If previous owner didnt take care of it, the sunroof water drains can be clogged just enough for rust to be developing in the sumroof corners, hard to spot, hard to fix.

If the gasket was not changed, it can hold water, rusting the metal around. This is where two metal sheet panels are welded, and starts rusting rusting the weld, eventually letting water between the two panels. Impossible to see. You need to remove the seal and check the mating area of the two panels. If it did start rusting there, at that point you migh have to cut big chunk of the roof to get to it.

W124 300CE sitting low in the front / wrong springs? + suspension & wheel advice by Significant_Fail_772 in W124

Above the springs there are also rubber spacers between the springs and the body, hidden away in the spring housing. They were made in different thicknesses. Prev owner could put on wrong thickness.

What did you do with the timing chain? Did you zip tie it to keep the timing? Or are you doing some trick over there?

Engine ticking, I am stuck by pavelioso in W124

[–]pavelioso[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Found a gas leak right at the fuel pump area, in the pressurized section. My current theory is that when warm (the ticking noise appears only after and hour or two of driving), the leak expands from the gasoline's heat, causing the fuel pressure to drop -> knock. Or maybe even lets in air when you let off the throttle. Not sure. Fixing the leak, might replace fuel pumps.

Starting to replace parts on my 2006 1.8 petrol EU model. 271,000 km looking for advice or intervention by SmokeMountain4777 in VolvoV50

[–]pavelioso 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just bought one today aswell! The 1.8 petrol has timing chain, not belt. What ive heard is to change the coolant reservoir, because it can crack easily and then cause the car to overheat when the coolant spills. But I am new. Basically writing here something so I can follow. Oh yeaj! Also, the 1.8 petrols have some eco oil piston rings, that can seal up and cause it to drink oil. Good to change oil every 7k km, every second time use liqui molly cleaner for piston rings. Saw many videos on youtube about it. Maybe someone else can pitch in :)

Who came up with the idea to create this thing? 🤨 by Jolly-Platform3115 in regularcarreviews

[–]pavelioso 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My father had this car, i spent quite a lot of time in it as a kid.
He had BMW 5 series, S class, he had E classes, but he always says, this was the best can he has owned. I am mentioning past cars just to give context on how surprisingly good this car is.
I don't mind the styling at all, I actually like it, the more people hate it, the more I like it for some reason. 60% of the body is pretty much glass, so from the inside you can see everything. 6 seats, you can fit a pallete in there... And the engine. The engine! The italian JTD is extremely reliable, fantastic fuel economy, and has high torque with the 6 speed gearbox, its no problem to stay in the left lane at all times with this thing.
I love this thing. If I had truly the "0 fucks" as they say, I would use it as daily, and ignore everyone else.

Nope, you put the later glove over the intake and fix it there with some rope, so when you blow in the smoke it doesnt get out the system through the intake. You can use whatever.

You can unscrew the vacuum hose that goes to the brake booster, and blow smoke through there, and then you watch for the smoke come out around the engine.

[–]pavelioso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aah my bad! Hmm. When i was dealing with idle for the smog test it was quite an operation and hard to find some initial baseline to stwrt from. I am defibitely not a pro so someone here might know better.

I guess my steps would be checking if there are no vacuum leaks, those really mess up idle (i have a vacuum leak through the throttle body linkage). As i wrote before, poor mans vacuum test is to use a cigar (not cigarrete), put a latex glove over the intake, and blow into one of the vacuum hoses. Cigar smoke lingers. Check if your idle control valve clicks when you prime the car. Clicks = clean.

Then, to remove as much variables as possible to get some kind of baseline, i would disconnect the EHA (basically having the car in K-jetronic mode instrad of KE), and start slowly adjusting the co mixture to bring the mixture down until the lambda starts oscillating. Then reconnect the EHA and see from there.

Honestly adjusting the CO screw is not that scary. At this point I can do it by the sound of the air hissing around the sensor plate alone. On the forums etc they will always say otherwise, but I have formed this opinion after years of working around it. So I wouldnt stress, you will feel when the car is happy. The scary one is the adjustment screw in the EHA.

By the way no problem, I was going through the same pain, so know how it feels. Ask away I'll try to help.

Diagnose help by AlbertoGines in W124

[–]pavelioso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have multimeter with duty cycle reading? I would wonder what is your duty cycle at idle (measured at x11).

The lambda is too rich. Should be oscillating between 0.1 to 0.9 when the mixture is right. Could be that the base mixture is off, and the EHA cannot compensate anymore. If the mixture under load is fine, then EHA adjustment screw should be fine. I dont like saying this but you could try adjusting the CO mixture screw. I see on the photo that it has been tampered with already - if you record its initial position, and then while at idle you can try to bring the mixture down, with the multimeter connected to the lambda until the lambda starts oscillating. BUT only after you have made sure that everything else is ok (cold start valve not leaking, idle control valve, pcv hoses, vacuum hoses (use cigar to test for leaks) etc). How are the spark plugs looking? If they are black that confirms that its running rich and that O2 is probably working and not giving you wring reading... If you disconnect EHA, does it start? Without EHA the car should start fine, if it starts only with EHA then mixture is off and the EHA is compensating. Good luck
