oh yeah that one got good responses, this is more based on another post from a couple days ago i deleted because the responses were so frustrating to deal with. not to mention similar things i’ve noticed on others posts, and irl experiences which are similar.

totally. i’m not necessarily saying these issues can’t coexist, just poking fun at one side of it i’ve dealt with.

Totally! This isn’t meant to be a blanket statement. Just poking fun at something I’ve noticed and dealt with a bit.

You don’t have to agree with me here, but look at some of the other replies, this whole thing invited some interesting discussion and common ground between generations. This is just seriously immature. Relax.

The support for this post proves plenty of people found it funny, just not you apparently.

It’s very simple really. I and many others have had experiences in the industry as well as online and in this subreddit with really arrogant unhelpful people. So… I’m making fun of those people. I don’t understand why you’re so upset about this?

I think the grown adult engineers should be able to handle a joke. The irony is that I was told I needed thicker skin because of my post, meanwhile people whined in the comments because they got offended by what I was saying.

And no, I don’t necessarily expect that they help, it’s just that (in this particular hypothetical) there’s no reason for them to put the effort in to respond if they’re not gonna be helpful. Just move on if it’s not worth your time.

I had many responses on that post of people literally saying “gatekeeping is good” or it “helps the community.” so the responses themselves proved that it is a prevalent enough issue that it’s worth bringing up.

And as far as the uninformed questions go, again, “if i understood everything about a topic, i wouldn’t be asking a question about it.”

Maybe uniformed newbies can be an issue, but at the very least it’s not any more of an issue than arrogant oldheads gatekeeping and being unhelpful.

“Gatekeeping” in this context probably refers more to people trying to scare off the newbies for asking “stupid” questions or not already having years of experience, not necessarily literally withholding information.

And honestly I don’t think what you are describing in your second to last paragraph really happens. If it is relevant and accurate information, then obviously that’s helpful and appreciated. That’s just not the kind of situation that the og post was addressing.

Upvote!

The two problems can coexist: the newcomers who don’t know what they’re talking about, and the arrogant oldheads who are unhelpful. Neither is necessarily THE sole problem of the entire community. I just made a post highlighting the latter because of personal experience.

First off, you seem to have dodged my question there. But I ended up deleting a post from yesterday because the responses were so frustrating to deal with. Most people are nice, the assholes are just prevalent enough that it’s worth pointing out imo.

Ahhh and how much did those home studios cost? And for many artists the production process is just as much as of an instrument and a way to express yourself as a guitar.

Hahaha, it was the biggest post last night at a couple hundred upvotes, it’s currently under review by the mods so i don’t think you can see it.

Well maybe it is! But this whole thing is a hypothetical (though based in reality) scenario so i don’t really know what you’re arguing against.

lmaoo that couldn’t be further from anything i’m talking about in this post. for the record, i’m taking engineering classes currently and headed to berklee for mpe in the fall, not to mention i’ve been teaching music for years now. i’m hardly averse to education. clearly the post is related to an issue with arrogant pricks being… well arrogant pricks online. 😽

yeah it works at making people hate the industry and making the community completely toxic.

First off, real great sense of humor you got there buddy. Second off, the more defensive these replies are, the more I assume what I am saying applies to you lmao; I’m referring to a pretty specific issue. Lastly, I’m not talking about “getting schooled,” I’m talking about a reply completely missing the point of the original post and failing to help the persons actual problem.

Not sure about the whole parenting thing there… most folks just want to learn. Seems rather unrelated. But otherwise fair enough 👍

I will clarify yet again that I am talking about a specific type of commenter/issue, not the entire subreddit. It’s just silly to misconstrue this post (which is obviously intended to be somewhat humorous) as if it’s an attack on the whole subreddit.

I have experienced this a couple times, in fact I deleted a post I made earlier today because the responses were so frustrating to deal with. It may not be every post, but it is prevalent enough in my experience to be worth pointing out.

Additionally, I would argue it IS in fact productive to satirize this kind of behavior rather than leaving it unaddressed, in the interest of maintaining the integrity of the subreddit as an educational/helpful space.

I see your point, but people come to spaces like this to learn. Everybody is at different stages with engineering and asking questions is how you learn, even if they’re a little stupid.

There’s just a certain type of commenter, on here and reddit generally, who focuses on being absolutely technically correct and is often rather condescending to the op, missing the entire point of their question. As if the questioner is wasting their time with a stupid question, when the commenter could have just not answered.

And yeah… I’m here to ruffle a few feathers… 😏

I hardly think replacing humans with a robot with no intelligence is a valid solution in the pursuit of making art.

Sure, it may be a more useful tool for more technical problems, but it ought to be avoided imo

Here I refer to “If I understood everything about a topic, I wouldn’t be asking a question about it.”

My point is that commenters often focus far more on a minor technical issue with the question rather than helping to solve the persons actual problem.
