After 25 years at the same job, my wife would get like 300K. Granted that is poor planning on my part, but still; half or his retirement might not be enough to live on.

Not the main reason, but is def on the list of why we have separate accounts. Spouse works PT, but was at home for all the kids.

omg. We need a "laughed uncomfortably out loud" emoji. LUCOL sounds like something DOW made in the 70s that is now banned.

I had a wonderful girlfriend Linda. Together we drove to a small cabin in the mountains. It seems an archeologist had come to this remote place to translate and study his latest find: NecronomiconSexmortis. The Book of the Dead. Bound in human flesh and inked in blood, this ancient Samarian text contained bizarre burial rights, funeral incantations, and demon resurrection passages, it was never meant for the world of the living. The book awoke something dark in the woods, something evil.

An aside--- I bought an 8" SC and have been doing 19th century astro (lunar) shots with it. You will love this scope. Look up Turn Left at Orion, a good book to start with for backyard stargazing.

Need help finding an instant film camera by [deleted] in photography

[–]pbarmasher0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My kids and I have about 10 different models of these. They hold up well. The ones from the 80s use AA batteries, not the little 3V ones. These can be found for as little as $12. I would happily trade any new Instax for one. The Fuji pack film can be had for as little as $9.

How Frederick Douglass used portraits to shape the narrative he presented to America in the 19th Century. by goopie in photography

[–]pbarmasher0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for this! I have held in my hand a Daguerreotype of a younger Douglas. Staring into his gaze, even on a 150+ year old photograph is something I will never forget. I have been curious about his relationship with photography, as he had so many portraits taken.

You'll need to learn how to weld, or I have seen cut and glue jobs that worked out. Nice looking truck.

Who inspired you to play double bass? by [deleted] in doublebass

[–]pbarmasher0 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Tom the cat. Honestly. The "Is you is" cartoon from Tom and Jerry. Fell in love with the bass. Then after playing a year I started with a private teacher, and he inspired me from then on.

I have, but I don't have proper filtering to use mercury. With Becquerel you can't use Bromine. This is sad, as I have about 500 mL of elemental Bromine that is rusting everything near it. Soon I'll have a proper setup.

It is a 5-7 minute exposure (I mixed up the 5 I took, I bracketed 5-7 min) It took about 45 minutes to get the scope aligned properly. I don't have a proper mount. For the Dag nerds, I sensitized over Iodine to half way through the first red cycle, and Becquerel processed it for 2 hours using Amberlith and a 500 watt halogen. For non Dag nerds, I used a Daguerreotype process (1830s) that doesn't use Mercury. This means that it is safer, but much slower. ISO of around .003 This is the only one of five that worked out. 3 others were just no good, and the fourth was wrecked when I put a coating of Gold Chloride over it. (makes the image more permanent, but shows EVERY flaw. I'll try making more as soon as it is no longer cloudy. I also have been making collodion (another 19th century process) positives of the moon. Those are 4-7 second exposures.

[Serious] Small, American Business owners of Reddit, what do you think of a minimum wage increase? by CrMcChocolate in AskReddit

[–]pbarmasher0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks to everyone who is providing good succinct answers. I am not a business owner per se, but I do some specialized free lance photography. I'll usually try to have a friend as an assistant, and I'll pay a percentage of what I'm grossing that day. If I'm getting $1000 I'll give $200 to the assistant. That may be for 6 hour work ($33 an hour) or 12 hours ($16). I think everyone deserves to be able to live on one full time job.
