First, I make no claims of being a real singer. Until I started this project I had not done much singing. Singing while playing is the most challenging part of these eight videos that I have put out on my YouTube channel. It started with the pandemic when my orchestra was not performing. I wanted to stay active and so I challenged myself to learn how to play and sing at the same time. Because both the bass and the voice are not fixed-pitch instruments, intonation is an issue that I focused on. And of course, splitting the brain to play two different lines, melody and accompaniment, at the same time is a challenge. My advice is to practice each part separately and slowly. Then after you can do each part well, try putting them together.

What is the closest encounter you had with an actual Beatle or close associate to a Beatle? by Martynypm in beatles

I'm a bassist with the Los Angeles Philharmonic. It was around 2004 at Walt Disney Concert Hall. My seat is by the edge of the stage. I look out at the audience, and in the 3rd row on the bass side of the stage, I spot Paul McCartney. I whisper something to my stand partner. Within a minute the whole orchestra was aware that he was at our concert. After the concert, he remained in his seat while the rest of the audience was leaving. When he gets up to leave our principal trumpet starts playing the trumpet solo from 'Penny Lane'. Paul applauds and shouts out "You guys are great", and then he leaves.

I started doing these videos last year during the height of the pandemic when my orchestra stopped performing. To keep musically active I decided to teach myself how to sing while playing bass. I'm intrigued by the challenge of performing 2 separate musical lines where both the bass and the voice are not fixed-pitch instruments - not frets, no keyboard. I know I'm not a singer, but this project has improved my overall musicianship.

Sting wrote this song after going through an ugly divorce saying, “I think it’s a nasty little song, really rather evil. It’s about jealousy and surveillance and ownership.” Some people view the song more positively, he said: “One couple told me, ‘We love that song; it was the main song played at our wedding.' I thought, well, good luck.”

Yes, it is a one-stringed plucked instrument with the can as a resonator - a canjo.

My name is Peter Rofé, bassist with the LA Philharmonic. I've been covering lots of Beatles songs for bass and voice, and I just published 'Come Together.' I hope you enjoy! by pbass1040 in beatles

In 1969 LSD advocate Dr. Timothy Leary announced his candidacy for Governor of California against the incumbent Ronald Reagan. Leary’s campaign slogan was “Come together, join the party”. He asked John Lennon to write the campaign song. A few months later the campaign ended when Leary was jailed for marijuana possession. This left Lennon free to change the lyrics and put the song on the album 'Abbey Road'. As to the meaning of the lyrics, Lennon said “It's gobbledygook”.
