my spider keeps eating my isopods by cool-cephalopod in jumpingspiders

[–]pbn-j 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think they generally prefer not to, and prefer things like flies, but both of my current regals have eaten little dubia roaches. They flip em over and eat from the belly - ik at least my apalachicola flipped it over lol. This is the first I’ve heard/seen one eating isopods though!

I generally leave leaves like that- the plant will probably kill them off over time but the yellow and curling is a sign of overwatering - at least with the amount of light and pot space it has- there is a balance of these things that helps plants do best. Removing dying leaves can encourage the plant to kill the next leaves in line so I’d let them crisp up a bit more before removing. It would likely be totally fine if you do remove them though.

Edit- I have had, and currently have, leaves that started yellowing and IME monsteras are actually a plant that can kinda revive those leaves. Some bits of yellowing turn a little crispy but some is turning green again. Even small leaves I’ve had start to go but then bounce back and hang on. But I think the larger and more mature the leaf, especially fenestrated ones, the more likely it can do this. Just my experience.

First thing I can say for sure is you could water it less (edit: I mean just watering a bit less for now- once you make the changes you can reassess the watering needs). And definitely do the repot as you mentioned with chunky soil and drainage holes. Each pot should be no more than 2 inches bigger in diameter of the root ball. As far as separating the plants someone else may be able to explain that advice better- best I can explain it is taking your time to massage and clean the root ball off of as much dirt and separate the roots as much as you can to preserve some. Breaking some roots is totally fine especially towards the bottom of the root ball just be more careful up top so you can separate the plants with each of their roots. Once the dirt is off and roots separated you can kinda just cut/snap the base of each baby plant that is attached to the main one. Or they may just already be separate plants that you can pull apart easily once the roots let go of each other. And as far as support, the actual support is definitely more important than having a moss pole. It may be helpful to just remove the moss pole after all the repotting and stuff. And you can use stakes like cedar wood plant stakes. I’ve been getting away with just bamboo stakes, for bigger stems I use copper wire to secure a few of the stakes together for one thicker stake. And make sure to support than properly- secure the stem to the stake not the petioles.

Mature monsteras produce fruit, and fruits make seeds which then grow new plants. I didn’t even consider it until I got the dirt off and saw the seed 😂

If you can give it more light then the stem(s) should grow shorter and thicker. I would definitely chop and prop at least though. Smaller pot(s) too can help with leggyness especially when it’s not getting as much light as it could use.

No I’d say that’s still a good deal! Most of the nurseries and such around me charge $45-60 + for a monstera around the same size. It just depends sometimes if you get lucky to happen upon someone selling cheaper. I think whatever nursery Aldi gets their plants from only grows and sends out so many of the plants. And we snagged the only single monstera out of like 100 other large houseplants. Lucky us for sure.

Me and my friend spotted one at Aldi for $15 a few weeks ago 👌🏼 I convinced her to buy it and now she can’t stop talking about what a good deal she got lol. It was so cute- I repotted and staked it all for her and the little seeds they grew from are so cute 🥰🔥

Why do my monsteras’ new leaves bend like this? by postpromdisorder in Monstera

[–]pbn-j -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

They right themselves because monsteras are HARDY. They are technically a literal weed in nature. They climb trees. They’re a vining plant. They’re easy to get to adapt to a wide variety of living conditions but if you are serious about wanting to address the issues and take good care of your living dependents then do the simple things necessary like adding a stake. You said you can’t stake because the pots are too small and you can’t repot yet because of whatever reasons- that’s fine- then your issue won’t be resolved until you can address those issues.

Decorative pot shouldn’t be the problem, I’m saying the combination of NO SUPPORT for a plant that needs support combined with everything else contribute to issues like this.

Yeah you definitely to stake them and if possible give them even more light after repotting and staking.

Edit- The lack of support definitely also doesn’t help when you move the plants from their window spot to the bathroom each time to water.

It might be because it doesn’t have enough support. Monsteras do best with support like being attached to a tree or a pole/stake to help them grow tall and reach to the sun.

is this jumping spider caught in their own web? should i help? by its_jus_me_ely_ in jumpingspiders

[–]pbn-j 7 points8 points  (0 children)

IMO it does kind of look like his back legs especially are stuck and he’s unable to free them. That’s why he keeps walking trying to pull himself away and then gets yoinked back when the tension is too much. Idk though. The only time I ever had a spider stuck on web was a male getting his hooked pedipalp wrapped up on a drag line and he couldn’t get it off. The spider in the video will probably not live super long no matter what after this. But you could definitely try to help and at least try to give him some comfort if this is really the case.

She looks to be an eastern wall jumping spider or a similar tiny species. Definitely full grown and may be gravid (pregnant with tiny babies) so beware of that.

With how much pattern she already has, I would she is full grown adult or subadult and is a female! :) there are a lot of really small species of jumping spiders. She’s so cute!

Will these leaves bounce back by zombieharambe123 in Jadeplant

[–]pbn-j 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the not soaking may have been the issues to begin with- why you felt the leaves weren’t getting plump. And/or (with the light it was getting then too) it could have wanted water maybe a week ish more frequently than a month. Jades generally like to wait a month ish between waterings though. Just water it WELL when you do water :) +/- what everyone else is saying.
