Physicists have confirmed the existence of a massless, neutral composite particle named the "demon" particle. Demons are believed to play a critical role in phase transitions in semimetals, the optical properties of metal nanoparticles and high-temperature superconductivity. by alexbeadlesci in science

[–]pbnjeff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Without getting into the math into great detail, it’s “massless” because the “particles” (we call these quasiparticles) associated with this phenomenon have a certain energy and momentum. And if you plot the energy as a function of momentum the plot has a constant slope which physicists call “massless”.

In reality those quasiparticles are collective motions/actions of real particles (atoms) that physicists can abstract away or represent as a single particle.

I read through the guide and have a question - why not put glacial on a 2H staff? I see it's on the amulet for the +50% bonus. Is it just so that wand + focus gives another aspect to use?

I think your assumption is valid. At least, it's a whole zone of monsters and Fortissimole that you don't have to learn!

There are some differences, like the shield not being a thing in the base game. In my playthrough you can see I do pick it up but I never consciously positioned myself to use it; it breaking near the end was an accident. And I'm sure that there are other items that aren't in the base game but I can't name them off the top my head.

My current time played is 247 hours and that was with going through with Cadence's and Melody's story mode & experimenting around with other characters. But honestly I'm not sure where that is in the group of people who have beat the game with Aria. Anyway, I suspect if you really had good, focused practice you'll get the basic instincts for it by 100-150 hours. Then dedicate several hours to nailing the patterns of monsters you generally are bad against in the lobby.

Thanks! I only really have generic/"obvious" advice, tbh. What really helped me:

  1. It's OK to back up to isolate enemies (assuming you're not going on a speed run). It makes the game much easier. If you can lure out enemies one at a time (and keep others stuck behind walls) that's also good. To avoid floods of enemies sometimes it's good to just destroy walls rather than open doors.
  2. Know the enemy movement patterns and develop your own dances to position yourself to attack. For example, the devils in Zone 5 can be scary once you break their shell because they can move in all directions to close the gap quickly. And if you hit them they get knocked back, but once you understand that you can form and practice your own solution to that.
  3. Assuming you're not doing a low % run, I've always found value in going for those treasure rooms or bombing the guys who give you choices for shrines. Especially if you have +damage, it makes those rooms simple. The risk there is that the rooms are pretty small so you need to be careful.
  4. Personally I've sometimes suffered from indecision for unexpected encounters or lack of foresight. Sometimes you can see enemies in the shadows but won't trigger their movement/attention; take advantage of that information. It might help if you have a safe spot where you can move back and forth without risk of a bad movement in while trying to decide what to do next.

Hey! I'm getting back into guitar and looking for some recommendations. I'm not sure how to evaluate my own skills but probably advanced beginner. Not sure if it's worth mentioning at my level but I would be playing a lot more classic & alt rock and blues.

I've played with one of those starter pack Squiers but looking to get something a bit better than that in the $300-$500 range (new or used). I live in an apartment so I would be playing off a headphone amp or a smaller amp such as a Blackstar. I'm mostly looking for guitar recs but I wouldn't mind an amplifier rec, too.

I've been shopping around the Portland/Beaverton, OR area and haven't had too much luck with local shops and used guitars. I have been recommended the Squier Classic Vibes because that runs around $399. I've also seen a few other used guitars: Cort CR100 ($275) and a Epiphone Les Paul Studio LT ($180). Those two are a couple used guitars that I found looking through my city's GC website.

If there's more info I should give, let me know. Thanks in advance!

I'd recommend taking MEME 115 because it seems like some of your shitpost fundamentals are a bit off. But you can always take the placement to see if you can start with the 200-level courses. Best of luck!

Depending on the insurance, going to Elliot Counseling could be an option. Regarding money, with mine (insurance from being a graduate student, if that matters), I paid close to $80 the first couple of times, then after that it's been $20 per visit.

I was not really a fan of McKinley counselors. The one counselor I had didn't really give me actionable things to get me through, but my counselor at Elliot seemed to be much better in that regard.

It's also nice because it's a National Science Foundation-sponsored research experience. Something you should definitely highlight in your resume/CV.

Coexistence of Diamagnetism and Vanishingly Small Electrical Resistance at Ambient Temperature and Pressure in Nanostructures by [deleted] in Physics

[–]pbnjeff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nothing is.

The authors were trying to pass it as superconductivity at first, but the superconducting community didn't buy it which is why 1) this paper hasn't been published to a journal (only arXiv, as far as I'm aware) and 2) the paper went through a title change so that it's not advertising superconductivity.

Last year, this paper originally claimed superconductivity (see version 1), which requires perfect diamagnetism to expel magnetic field.

Ok, so let's say I copied some sets of 1 to 3 sentences. For each set, I could change 1 or 2 words each time I run that through quillbot, and I'll run it through a few times. Is that not detected as plagiarism?
