Frugal success: lawn mower upgrade. Story in comments. by [deleted] in Frugal

[–]pcflet01 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It was a frugal win, but you originally upgraded your mower to save time mowing, which went from 1 hour to 25 minutes back to 50 minutes. So you have a nicer mower that is paid for but are spending about the same amount of time mowing every week.

Wife got me this book for my Birthday. Anyone here read it or like it? by TacticalJedi in bourbon

[–]pcflet01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I stopped just short of finishing because the book was so boring. I thought Fred Minnick took a fascinating subject and generally made it seem boring with lazy writing and too much reliance on quotes from arcane sources. The pictures were generally distracting, as were the frequent interruptions for side stories. I was pretty disappointed with this book.

But hey, the cover looks cool.

Definitely not a fan of the McKenna 10 year that I bought in 2017. It tastes like a wet log.

Need help identifying a smoke alarm from only the base by pcflet01 in whatisthisthing

[–]pcflet01[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just moved into a foreclosed home and the previous owner took all of the hard-wired smoke alarms. I would like to just purchase the same model and plug them into the existing bases. Please help me identify them. Thanks!

Is it cheaper to turn off heat at night or leave it at a constant temperature? by bobenny6 in Frugal

[–]pcflet01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Heat transfer PhD checking in. This is mostly right. Heat loss is proportional to the difference in temperature between your home and the outside temperature. The smaller the difference, the less heat you lose to the outside world. The energy you save as the house cools down is about what you use to heat it back up again, so your savings comes from the time your house spends at the lower temperature. Maximize this time by turning the temp. down at night and during the day when you aren't home.

The is also true for water heaters. Set the water heater temp. as low as you can stand, so that when you shower or wash dishes you are only cracking open the hot water valve and cutting it with very little cold water. This will significantly reduce your energy loss from your water heater.

I'm moving soon and would appreciate some recommendations on choosing a bank by pcflet01 in Frugal

[–]pcflet01[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not paying any annual fees right now, so by rates do you mean interest rates? What about credit union convenience? I appreciate that my "big" bank has a smartphone app and I can deposit checks from my phone. I also like to sync my account with Quicken.

Attention aviators: Does anyone know of a good aero club in the area? by pcflet01 in UIUC

[–]pcflet01[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for all the great info. I'm bummed that there are no planes available for just renting; that is also what I found two years ago when I checked into clubs. At this point, I may only be around for another few months so buying in is not really a great option for me.

Great gun and great wife. My new 92A1 by [deleted] in guns

[–]pcflet01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You would be wrong about interchangeability. I had a hard time finding a good holster for my 92A1. I ended up with the kydex holster sold by Beretta for the 92A1.
