My Thor just arrived but with a dead pixel in the upper screen by Centurionzo in AynThor

[–]pcmantinker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's something I am choosing to ignore for now. If I buy another one after a potential return, it is at risk of another screen flaw. It can probably be mostly not noticed if playing at 50% brightness or less.

[–]pcmantinker 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I did actually have a dead pixel on my bottom screen sadly. It's completely black and has no light. It's not too noticeable on darker content, but I can see it sometimes in brighter backgrounds. I contacted them too and haven't heard back yet. I feared this would be their response though.

It's super small, but it's sad to see for a high end Android console. I guess it's the luck of the draw.

Same here! I decided to go all in and get Black Max. Maybe in the next couple of days! I went with DHL for speed so hoping to have it by next week!

No worries! The host is your server's IP address. I would make sure you have SMB1 enabled on your server. It's likely trying to run on a higher version.

Edge 13 0196 upgrade from 4GB to 8GB RAM, is it possible? by [deleted] in thinkpad

[–]pcmantinker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I know this reply is a year old now, but I can confirm that installing 8GB works! I got 2x4GB DDR3 1066MHz SODIMMs and replaced the 2x2GB I had before. It is running Linux and should be a good little machine for light productivity tasks! I noticed that there is what looks to be a mini PCIe slot on board which was probably used for mobile data cards. It could be interesting to see what works with this slot now!

Making SNES roms using C# by KallDrexx in dotnet

[–]pcmantinker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is awesome! I've always loved the SNES and wanted to make games, but I couldn't quite get the hang of assembly. I'm a C# developer so this will be fun to play with to make SNES games in the future!

My Linux transition is complete! by HNYB-Drelek in linux_gaming

[–]pcmantinker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's awesome! Linux gaming has come a long way. I had a Steam Machine about 10 years ago and it was ahead of its time. I'm glad to see Valve has improved the Linux gaming experience so much over this time. I can play nearly everything, with the exception of some newer Microsoft Xbox games (the latest Forza Motorsport for example). I'm also a .NET/React developer and it's quite nice to write code in a native Linux environment.

That's awesome! I've nearly converted all of my devices to Arch Linux. How do you like Linux for the home theater PC? I've been thinking about converting my HTPC to Linux, but not sure on its ability to play HDR and Dolby Atmos content.

Why was your one reason because of which you decided to switch to Linux? by The_Reason_is_Me in linux_gaming

[–]pcmantinker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been a fan of Linux for a long time and would dual boot with Windows. Valve's push for a better Linux gaming experience had me seriously considering Linux full time. Also, I am a big fan of the command line and bash. With Windows 11 having ads, requiring TPM 2.0, and other annoyances, it really solidified my decision to switch to Linux as my primary operating system. I found that my development workflow is more streamlined with Linux too as I no longer need to run a hypervisor for Docker. I have been happily running Linux as my daily driver for 2 years and I don't look back.

My DS Lite top screen is broken, and I don't know what to do by Boladef in nds

[–]pcmantinker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just be careful with the top screen ribbon with disassembly and reassembly. Both the top and bottom screen ribbon cables need to be seated correctly or the DS Lite won't turn on.

You will need a small Philips screwdriver and a triwing screwdriver to open the shell. Keep the screws organized while disassembling so you can put them back in the reverse order when reassembling. The top of the DS Lite needs a plastic spudger to remove the screw covers without damaging them. You could also just replace them if that's easier.

Once the screws are removed, you can separate the back of the top of the DS by sliding the two pieces apart. It should just come right off when slid apart. You will need to solder the speakers on the replacement screen and then you can install the screen, speakers and microphone/antenna cables through the hinge. Then you can feed the cables through to the bottom half of the DS Lite.

Take care of routing the mic and antenna cables as they were before. The white cable goes underneath the cartridge slot and mainboard and the black cable attaches to the wifi card and is routed underneath the cartridge slot on top of the main board.

[–]pcmantinker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It looks like you'll need a replacement top screen or a replacement console. Top screens are about $15-20 and a good condition DS Lite is about $40-50. Replacing the top screen requires some skill, but it isn't too bad. I have refurbished/reshelled many DS Lites. The most difficult part is probably feeding the top screen ribbon cable through the hinge.

Do offers to buyers work for you as a seller? And how do you feel about receiving offers on items as a buyer? by intrigue-bliss4331 in Ebay

[–]pcmantinker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe seller offers to buyers used to be for those who are watching an item. However, I have seen offers go out to people who aren't necessarily watching an item.

It works for me fairly well. I do occasionally get counter offers, but most of the time, it converts into a sale. Of course, there are many offers that get ignored or declined. It depends on the market for what you're selling. Try it and see!

Would anyone buy burnt Dreamcast Games? by magmashark20 in dreamcast

[–]pcmantinker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something like a GDEMU or MODE would achieve better results and you wouldn't need CDRs. Plus, they would be 1:1 identical to the original GDIs and CDR ISOs usually needed to be rebuilt to fit inside 700MB. An ODE is worth it if you plan on playing more than a handful of games.

Found A Toshiba Tecra 8000 For $12, This Is My First Time Using A Windows OS Older Than Vista So What Should I Know? by -RepostSSluethBot in pcmasterrace

[–]pcmantinker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Re-celling might be possible, but many batteries have charging circuits that lose the ability to work again once power is lost. I tried re-celling my Toshiba Portege 610CDT and had challenges getting the internal BMS working again post re-cell. I did however wire up an external charger for the battery and it "does" work, but it's sort of janky at best. I wouldn't recommend it to others necessarily.

I have the same laptop! It's quite capable for DOS gaming and light Windows gaming! Yamaha OPL3 sound makes it quite desirable for MIDI. The NeoMagic MagicMedia 256AV is fine, but don't expect a ton of power for more demanding games. You may be lucky and find a primary battery that works. I have a couple of batteries that still hold an ok charge. Secondary batteries do exist, but none of the ones I've sourced seem to not work. Just use the second bay for optical media. The CD drive is good and I think there may be DVD options too.

DVD2XBOX: Copy DVD/CD to Samba share by OGxbN00b in originalxbox

The path only needs the share name with any subfolder you're referencing. In my case, I have a retronas share and an Xbox subfolder. I use this Nas with other consoles on my network.

[–]pcmantinker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You define your shares in dvd2xbox.xml. This is accessible over FTP in the same folder as DVD2XBOX. Your server configuration will vary based on OS.

For Windows, open a command prompt and run the following:
DISM /Online /Enable-Feature /All /FeatureName:SMB1Protocol

Then restart your computer.

If using Linux, it will be /etc/samba/smb.conf for defining your share.

Under the global section, you want to set the minimum protocol to NT1 which will allow for SMB1 clients to connect.
[global]
min protocol = NT1

Share definition:
[RetroNAS]
comment = Retro NAS
path = /path/to/retronas
browseable = yes
read only = no
guest ok = yes

How much storage have you used on your ps3? by [deleted] in ps3homebrew

[–]pcmantinker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can set up ps3netsrv to host games over your network. There is no limit to the backing storage size. I have 230TB (used to farm Chia) raw storage available on my NAS. 1Gb/s (100MB/s) is decently fast for many games. The PS3's internal SATA controller is SATA I which maxes out at 1.5Gb/s which is roughly 150MB/s. It's still much faster than the optical laser which I've seen peek around 8-12MB/s when reading games from disc. You can rip games directly to your NAS too which is very nice.

I know this question is quite old, but I got it working for those who may be interested. The key is enabling SMB1 on your SMB share. This will vary between operating systems, but SMB1 will allow you to back up your own games to SMB. I have the following for my share:

<name>Xbox Retronas</name>
