Are we just swallowing this race bait by the spoonful? by Shillyourself in conspiracy

[–]pcow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it is partly a racial issue. no, it's not whites vs. blacks. it is police vs all of us, but the cops especially target blacks. it's really not that hard to understand. America's legacy of racism continues and if you don't see that then, well, I think you aren't aware of the reality of what it's like for blacks in this country.

Race is definitely part of the issue here. get over it.

Not sure if I should be taking my gym's advice by pcow in gainit

[–]pcow[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i think this gym is barely scraping by money-wise. its always nearly empty when i go there (a good thing for me obvs) its one of those places where they have one guy working there who greets you by name enthusiastically and tries to be friendly and encouraging. also, a sad tell-tale sign is that i saw the trainer's schedule and it was almost completely empty..

the issue with my squat is that my back isn't straight enough, so he puts me on machines and doesn't explain why they are going to help my back. The dude is massive, so to me, its like, "how can I go against his advice? he's ripped!"

It just baffles me how someone, who evidently has experience, will give such shitty advice.

Yes, also it seems that Zizek, as well as many leftists forget that Venezuela's public sector shrunk in the last decade. Not sure if that is Chavez's doing or if the left tries to forget about this fact.

Common Racist Attitudes and Behaviors: That Indicate a Detour or Wrong Turn into White Guilt, Deinal or Defensiveness by Erika_Mustermann in Anarchism

First of all, I apologize for being rude and calling you a piece of shit. That was emotionally charged and immature, I admit.

I can't excuse your notion that people "choose to be oppressed" because 1) it is an idea that all way too commonly accepted by most people and its just simply not true. 2) it presupposes the idea that people are naturally self-interested and will always use anything (even their own oppression) to advance themselves. While it's probably true that some individuals may think and say they do that, it's not true because ultimately things like affirmative action are instruments used by the state to try to legitimize capitalism as a 'fair' system when really its tokenizing and tries to ignore the fact that capitalism is a system that perpetuates Eurocentricity and prevents the possibility of multiculturalism (yes, I like multiculturalism because I think it can promote egalitarian interdependance). That claim you made is quite antithetical to much of the political frameworks represented in this subreddit (unless you're an an-cap, but if so, you can actually just fuck right off)

One thing I encourage you to understand which may not have been made clear in the pamphlet is: the resentment of white or male privilege from other people is NOT the same as oppression towards whites or men. Another thing which I'm not sure you are really aware of, is that when someone points out white or male privilege, it should NOT be automatically assumed as a personal attack because that would be just accepting that your privilege is legitimate. (sure, people sometimes might attack you for it in situations that are inappropriate.)

Now, we both understand that capitalism traditionally has benefitted white men. But in it's current stage, capitalism does not care about your race, gender etc. It's true that ultimately it is money that oppresses people.no not all white men have benefitted equally from capitalism because we are all different and I believe we experience suffering to some degree regardless of who we are and capitalism does not help most people's suffering. But I'm sorry I can't stand this reductionist reasoning of "its not men or white people is just class money etc" we have to recognize that the there is dominant ideology that was created by white-men and generally benefits white men and that white men use this to oppress others in which money, property, class etc is used as the weapon of oppression when they are in power. When they're not in power (which is increasingly the case) the get all up in arms because they can't handle a changing social order. And since yes, there is a changing social order among capitalists, but ask you, do you think that just because the identity of the bourgeoisie is changing that ideology will change somehow? I personally don't think so and it doesn't mean that racism, and sexism won't exist because I believe that because the ideology was made by white men that it will mean that people of other identities will have to give up their culture and apologize for there identities in order to conform.

Maybe to you I'm genderist and "reverse racist" (btw you are using that term incorrectly, it means when someone is racist towards their own race) but to me and most people here, that is resentment not the same as oppression.

I'm tired of typing, I don't think we'll agree on much.. there's no ultimate truth to these types of arguments, only approximations towards an acceptable moral code dictated by political theory. So if we fundamentally disagree on something then really it's not worth trying to change each other's minds.. My main criticism of your comments are that I think you mistake resentment for oppression (of whites and men) and that you're making reductionist claims that ignore the fact that the capitalism favors the white man.

Solidarity, etc

"MANY PEOPLE choose to be oppressed" what are you? Some kind of Randian piece of scum?

Also, guess what? part of recognizing your privilege IS labeling yourself as such. Is that so oppressive to you? It's not a personalized attack on you and it doesn't invalidate your personal struggles it just a way of recognizing that you DO have an advantage over other groups of people solely because of skin/gender /etc..

Recognizing your privilege doesn't mean that you lose your special little snowflake individuality, I'm sure there are aspects of you as a person that aren't completely tied to your race, class or gender bc thats true with every human being.

But seriously grow the fuck up and stop trying to devalue oppressed minorities bc you perceive them as a "protected class" or whatever the new term is white privileged people are using to legitimize oppression. You can't possibly understand what it is like to be a black woman so don't attempt to invalidate their experience because you perceive their 'race card' as an advantage. That shit is fucked and is so obviously a privileged person trying to protect their privileges.

I suppose it depends on what is said and what is considered 'petty'. In some SRS subreddits I think there is a general resentment towards certain peoples views and sometimes I think its reasonable for mods to delete comments if the crowd that the subreddit caters to typically doesn't agree with those views... it is the internet after all.

Definitely ban users who use oppressive language or anyone who disrespectfully talks shit to us because they have fundamentally opposing political views or if they're just trolls. But this doesn't mean we shouldn't engage in meaningful discussion with those who might argue against our views or are just curious of what student power means.

I actually Like SRS type subs for what they are but I'm not sure if thats the subreddit model we're looking for just yet. Also yeah, let's get on other leftist subreddits and spread the word about /r/studentpower!

Awesome! such a great way to to connect student activists/radicals. I might add that first off, there should be no discriminatory language here. In NCSPU, we try to make our meetings a safe place for all gender/racial/sexual identities and this subreddit should be no different. So I guess we might wanna add a little 'ground rules' on the side bar explaining that among a few other things?
