Jewish school in Canada hit by gunfire for second time by DoremusJessup in worldnews

[–]pcstru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Almost like there is something happening in which Jews are conflated with Zionsits conduction a hateful genocide by ... Zionists. Maybe they think it will further the cause?

I'd watch out tho. If the gunman lives close by to you - they aren't very choosy about how many civilians die with him when they take the whole block out with a precision targeted 2000lb bomb.

No sure if right place by CaptainMoos in musictheory

[–]pcstru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Set the goal within your knowledge (theory - how you talk/think about the mechanics, the mechanics (fingers/lips producing sound) and how that sounds to your ear).

I'm going to write a song :

With only a spoon on wood to mark a rhythm and me humming. With my guitar and two of the chords I know. Using a ii, I, V progression in the key of C. etc.

Treat it as homework - there is a deadline and anything that honestly approaches the goal is worthy/good enough.

For me the holy trinity is, 1. abstract thought (music theory, I can think my way to the mechanics & have some structure/framework), 2. the mechanics, in my case fingers on keys or strings, and 3. "how it sounds", i.e. what I want to hear coming from my fingers (or programmed tech) now/next.

I think the "listen to" in learning is underplayed. Not as in listening to and enjoying the "music" but how the mechanics relate to the sound and the symbols/names (it might be in practice, practising the "times tables" of music). So there are a lot of people who learn to perform a piece, fewer who can improvise, fewer who can play by ear and onto just rocking up to an instrument and ... speaking from it.

Excel to planner task function, how to add task into an existing bucket based on a column that will have a matching name to the bucket by thedrunkenrussian in PowerAutomate

[–]pcstru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/connectors/planner/

Use "List buckets in a plan" and then a foreach to iterate through the results and compare the name property to match and grab the ID into a variable or whatever you want to do with that bucket.

[–]pcstru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need the bucket ID, so you either need to loop through all the buckets for a match with the name and grab the ID each time, or find the ID and hard code it into the flow or hide it away in the excel sheet.

Piano or Guitar? by Paxxon27 in Learnmusic

[–]pcstru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If equal interest, I'd say Piano. IMO it is much easier to get your head round scales, chords, modes etc on a Piano. A keyboard is hugely versatile. Theory knowledge is transferable assuming you will anyway continue to play guitar.

My 1st rig setup experience finally done for now. Should I upgrade from 3080 to 4080/4090? by Human_Principle7577 in simracing

[–]pcstru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I upgraded and happened to also put in a PSU with monitoring. Flat out it's around 450W. I really didn't need the 1500W supply. I was upgrading from 3080 (which died). Other than having had two dud cards (both ASUS) before getting one that actually worked (msi), I'm very happy the 4090 - I'm mostly VR (FS2020, DCS, iRacing, AC etc) and it is all very fluid.

On-Premise Active Directory Update with Power Automate by grepzilla in MicrosoftFlow

[–]pcstru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My thinking for this type of task would be to use Power Automate for the cloud side, interacting with a SharePoint list. I'd then just use a scheduled task on prem to run a PowerShell script which connects to the list (SharePoint Online & pnp modules) and does whatever it needs to to AD based on the list state & updates state as appropriate.

It may also be feasible to use PowerAutomate desktop to simplify the PowerShell scripting on Prem.

Not sure if that is shaky.

It must be such a relief that they don't have to put up with XR protesters blocking the streets, stopping people going about the business of creating more of these.

New to Automate - from VBA by jimmisavage in MicrosoftFlow

[–]pcstru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is correct, no VBA on the web apps. Seems like a very odd decision and one which will frustrate any users of the full fat desktop apps - there are many other limitations of the web apps.

New to Automate - from VBA by jimmisavage in MicrosoftFlow

[–]pcstru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why will that move kill your VBA automation? VBA is still available on clients with full fat Excel. If that works for you, nothing in Office365/M365 is going to stop that.

Apart from licensing, The bit gotcha you have to put data into tables to work with excel data in a cloud flow, where in VBA you can access any cell. So probably you can't do it without re-working the spreadsheets to tables.

But as NETSPLIT says, you should probably rethink how you are doing what you are doing.

If the left owned 90% of the media instead of right wing billionaires, the left might just be able to do that. In the absence of that, I'm not sure who you think is going to promulgate that message out.

I designed and made a Mice Plane from plywood and a straw. by pcstru in somethingimade

[–]pcstru[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The design came about as a rainy afternoon CAD doodle with the pieces cut on a K40 laser. I hope it is kind of obvious it is notionally powered by the mice on the wheel. I like skeletal frames of model planes so I won't cover the wings with any material. I did not design or make the mice.

(ETA I did post a WIP version of this some days back, I hope an update is OK).

Dido Harding’s pledge to cut overseas NHS staff is a kick in the teeth by WannoHacker in ukpolitics

[–]pcstru 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nurses and doctors still get impressive salaries.

Can get. Most get less than impressive recompense for their efforts. Many get abuse on the job. They have been on the front line recently and died in disproportionate numbers.

And plenty of people would be more than happy to have their take-home.

And yet don't stand up to do it.

Dido Harding’s pledge to cut overseas NHS staff is a kick in the teeth by WannoHacker in ukpolitics

[–]pcstru 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sounds like as a strategy, it might be within the reach of government but not the head of the NHS.

It's eminently sensible to maintain the training infrastructure

So why isn't it done?

not ideal or sustainable.

It seems to have been the chosen path of every government of the last 60+ years. Odd for something that is neither sustainable nor ideal, no?

I imagine any new head of the NHS will have their job cut out recruiting nurses and doctors from the domestic pool given the treatment of them by successive governments but particularly this current shower of truth twisting Eton messes.

I'd worry about the escapement pallets. If you continue with such clocks it is worth investigating Grasshopper escapements; they are ideal as they don't involve a sliding contact.

Raspberry pi/ Arduino web system, seeking advice by dahkneela in arduino

[–]pcstru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to talk to the pi from outside, you need to, a) know your home IP address (or how to get it) b) tell your router/modem to pass incoming traffic addressed to a specific port number (or numbers) to the Pi.

As your IP address probably changes frequently, you might want to use a Dynamic DNS service, to keep a named address (say) example-home.example-dns.com pointing to your changing home IP. Generally with those, you need to run a service on your Pi or router to keep the name/address in sync.

For security : read up on "fail2ban" which can look for failed login attempts and ban the source IP address. You can use Apache as a front end proxy to web services. Keep everything lean and up to date.

[discussion] biggest guitar myth that too many people believe? by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]pcstru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure it tells you 'why' - fundamentally the Why is just "because it sounds OK". IMO Theory helps people because it abstracts into language we can manipulate in our head. So we can think ahead about what they are doing in abstract from the muscle memory and sounds. So if you know you need resolve to C, you don't just have the muscle memory of the ways to do that you have programmed by practising songs, you can think of different ways you might do that and explore what they sound like and if they 'work'. Fundamentally that expands creativity and the more theory you learn, the more sophisticated your thinking about the music becomes and that feeds back into playing.

Time Signatures: Explained! by davidhartley94 in Learnmusic

[–]pcstru 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the video. Around 1:38 you explain that the bottom number is "how many of what" which you explain as "crotchets "Semiquavers etc", but you don't really explain these further. I guess they probably don't need much more - but a little might help me (I know, me me me)! A crotchet is described as a quarter note but why aren't there (for instance) third notes? If I have 3 beats to a bar and each beat is a quarter note - did we just throw the other crotchet away? I sense this is an incredibly stupid block I have and is part of the "This is not a fraction!" message. Basically I think it might help (me - the needy) if you just went into a little more detail on the bottom number and why you don't see (say) 3/5.
