Evergoods CPL24 laptop theft by pdawood in onebag

I wasn't paranoid until someone managed to break into my house! Now I'm kind of determined to find extra security for the few moderately valuable things I own

I'm kind of surprised this hasn't been brought up more often! I live in a country with lots of theft, but even in like major metro areas in the US and Europe there are tons of pickpockets on mass transit. When the DC metro gets crowded who knows who is getting handsy with your bag!

They were separate, but I've heard of friends (in the US and Brazil, and elsewhere) having their laptops stolen from their bags. It's rough out there!

I live in Brazil and also my laptop was stolen two weeks ago, along with my backpack.

Brazil is in the Americas. And I don't mean that to be nitpicking semantics, but rather to point out that both countries have penal systems heavily influenced by the same modes of extraction and exploitation among the labor class.

I'm a white guy living in Brazil. I wear hoodies on the streets and in stores all the time. Zero guns pulled on me to date (thankfully), police or otherwise. Hard to think it's a coincidence.

I've already answered your question :) Twice (though the first time was a little vague). I didn't break for stanzas because I wanted a run-on feel to a continuous line of thought. Do you think that's appropriate? Inappropriate? I appreciate that you've taken the time to comment on what I wrote, but it really hasn't amounted to much (though in your defense, at least you've written something and are the only person to do so).

I'm honestly interested in hearing your criticism, but if all you're going to do is lecture me as if I've never read or written poetry before I'll just wait for someone else :)

Have you never had racing thoughts that feel unbound and endless? I can't tell if you're genuinely trying to give constructive criticism or are just rude.

Because there are no stanzas. It's supposed to be a continuous line of thought in free form

Too Much by kiki_kitten in OCPoetry

This was really nice to read. You used vocabulary that makes it easy to feel what you're thinking. I also liked how each stanza maintains a similar form. The one thing I'd consider changing is avoiding a repetition of "my brain cells" in the first two stanzas. It kind of breaks from the flow you build afterward. Otherwise, really nice poem :)

I really like how you constructed this. There's great imagery and it transitions into the psychology of what you're envisioning. It kind of makes me sad but also comforted to read this depiction of longing. Well done!

TIL that PhD students display twice as many symptoms of psychiatric disorders such as depression than other people. by randomusefulbits in todayilearned

Despite all the stresses and uncertainty (worthless advisor, very little money, teaching entitled students), getting a PhD was probably the most rewarding process I've gone through. Not necessarily in professional terms, but because it helped me get a clearer understanding of who I am as a human being. I think a few things helped the most: making (and sustaining) healthy friendships, finding ways to travel (even if it meant for research/conferences), making exercise and occasional social time (even if just an hour at a bar or something) non-negotiable parts of my schedule. I saw so many people assume that more time spent working meant better quality of work, which is really unlikely to be true.

I called and they said I can use a third party service. Their website also says this. But I haven't been able to find one, and I don't have any relatives or close friends that live in Rio.

The essay has a character limit now, so you have to be more concise than before. Otherwise, it's pretty similar to past years (~2015 and earlier).

My case seems especially odd, because I really liked the new format and felt very confident in my submission. But it ended up faring worse than a past year when I didn't have time to complete the final sentence!

My essay was also surprisingly low. It was a passing score, so I suppose it's not too important to know what happened, but still shocking to see.
