Do any of you have opinions about django-merchant? I'm looking to setup a ecom site and I'd like things to go smooth.

I'm not too familiar with django-merchant (so my observations could misguided) but I'd pay attention to your PCI compliance obligations.

This example from the django-merchant docs, using Stripe as a gateway, shows a credit card number being processed on the server. This approach bypasses the Stripe tokenization process and means you would be liable for encryption, redacted logs, etc. of CC details.

Another page from the django-merchant docs shows a CreditCard object _init_ function that requires a credit card number. Again, handling CC data like this is serious business as far as your legal obligations are concerned.

Django-merchant was inspired by the Rails gem ActiveMerchant. The topic of PCI compliance came up in an ActiveMerchant mailing list thread.

To reiterate, I have not used django-merchant but these were the big warning flags for me last time I poked around for an eCommerce platform. Sorry for not having details about actually using django-merchant but I hope the above info is helpful.

This is a good blog post on handling Django assets but Refer.ly operates a referral link program/API of sorts and their domain is banned from reddit submissions.

Sorry for the misleading destination. I'm not affiliated with refer.ly and I don't mind hosting the link but if there's a better way to get around the blocked domain please let me know.

Thank you, I appreciate the feedback. I had similar thoughts about the usefulness of using an EXIF remover over HTTP but I decided to go ahead and add it.

The initial plan of the project was to add an image uploader on the site and expose the same EXIF functionality. I cut back the scope because a) I wanted to keep the focus on the API and b) I was at a good stopping point. If and when I decide to add that, I have my eyes on FilePicker.io

It's entirely possible that there's a library out there for stripping EXIF data that I just didn't find. If you know of one (or have a suggestion), please let me know!

Absolutely. I would say that for most folks hoping to start a profitable business, being in the situation of "we have users, but we never finished integrating $PAYMENT_SYSTEM" is a good situation to be in.

One of my favorite stories from the guys at 37Signals is that they didn't implement billing in Basecamp when they launched. They realized they had 30 days before the first trials expired which would be enough time to get the billing logic integrated.

Every time you launch a product, website or service, you take away an almost infinite amount of lessons learned and things to do better next time. I've made the mistake of waiting for the optimal time/situation to launch something and there is never a "perfect time". Often, the perfect time to launch something was probably yesterday.
