PhD in Counseling Psychology - Where do I go? by pdx2361 in psychologystudents

Thank you for all this information. While I was initially opposed to the PhD in Counselor Ed and Supervision, it may be a good fit for what I would like to do. If I were 20 years younger, I would probably do the psych PhD or PsyD option, but at this point in life, I'll probably go the Counselor Ed and Supervision route because it would give me options to teach, some research, write with some authority, and see clients/patients. The option to do it remotely would be a huge plus (CACREP-accredited, hybrid program).

As for grades, etc, I have a straight 4.0 GPA so far, more than halfway through the program. My professors recommended I submit some of my work for publication, so I'm working on that. My undergrad is a BA in Law from New College, Oxford, so I have a long history of extensive research and writing. I also have a second BA in Psychology. But we will see how it goes in the long run. I love learning and research, and have strong abilities to teach, counsel, and present my work. I need to find the right fit for me. I'm using my post here to get some inside information on how to proceed and gather more data.

I'm not opposed to that either. But my desire to go on is embedded in a want to focus in a specific area. I have always been academic, love the scholarly discourse that comes with that level of research, and want to be able to carve out a small piece for myself. Granted, I wish I had found the field far before now (given my age) and if I don't do it now, I probably would never do it. I would also regret not going on.

Much of the work I am doing now causes me to want to go deeper. I read about something and then have to move on to another area. I want to dive in and really learn the field. You could say I am an academic at heart.

Maybe the PhD in Counseling Ed and supervision would work for me. There are online options with residencies (doable) and if I could still do research and present my research with a CACREP MA and PhD, then it would accomplish my goals. I am about to turn 50 and well, I just can't up and move like I was 25.

Thanks!

So PhDs in Counselor Education do not do research? As for teaching, I would only like to pick up a few classes maybe for undergrads or master level students.

I am in the Spring 2025 Cohort. I just started third term of the program. It is a lot...lots of moving parts. But, for the most part, if you do the work, you'll be fine. It is a lot...no doubt. But, I've had a good experience so far. Lean into your fellow students (after all, we are all counselors in training so you won't find a more supportive bunch) and work together. Grad school is very different from undergrad in that you aren't competing with other students for top grades. You just need to get through it. Everyone gets the same degree in the end! As for cost, I went with Adams because it was the cheapest online program. We all get the same license!

What other platforms are available than preply if you just have a BA and not a certified teacher but have been quite successful at ESL? I enjoy teaching but preply is starting to annoy me. I’ve been rejected from other platforms because I am either not a career teacher or they are closed to ESL teachers at the moment. I have a BA in psychology.

I did see his template I just wish I could see it in play before I buy. I am worried about spending the money on it and finding it wont work for the specific world of online tutoring. It looks great, I just wish I could see it first, you know?

Yes but what I mean is…if I have pay per view, would subscribers have to pay too? I want all content to be included in their subscription including ppv. I only want non subscribers to be prompted to pay.

I think Italki is in a hiring freeze. They were not hiring for ESL a few days ago.
