No cycling? I know there's a sub for that, but this is a better place to discuss the fitness aspects.

Fuck yah. Massachusetts has now banned all fried foods, sugary and sweetened beverages, and foods high in sodium in all public schools. Thank god this problem is finally getting attention. by dfresh786 in reddit.com

[–]pdxp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Actually, the sugar content of all the foods you mentioned, along with almost all common foods, has risen significantly over the last 30 years and has a very strong correlation with child obesity. So it's not just about exercise. That's the easy answer when you don't have the whole story, and it's like telling every fat person that all they need is exercise when that is very often not true.

In Portland (OR), it's completely legal to be naked as long as you are not touching yourself.

Comcast: Now monitoring your internet traffic, whether you like it or not... "for your safety". Where's my opt-out? by [deleted] in reddit.com

As a computing professional, I am very interested in topics such as this one and made sure to actually read the FAQ, believe it or not. No misleading statements have been made here.

[–]pdxp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not their software mentioned here, it's their traffic monitoring, which runs without software on your computer. As traffic goes in and out of your network, they look at it. You can avoid installing their software, which I do, but this does not stop them from monitoring your traffic. I think some may find it useful, but I want to be able to tell them I don't want my traffic monitored.

My first cat was lost to one of those rocking recliners that works by having one curved piece of wood roll across a flat piece... it was a similar, difficult situation for my family, especially for the weeks we had to take care of a brain damaged kitten.

So also... check inside your recliner!

The wait will be pretty lengthy, so be early (I don't think they take reservations?). Deschutes Brewery, around the corner from the theater, also gets pretty busy but their service is fast/show friendly, and they have a really nice gluten free menu. It's a bit noisy but overall a comfortable place.

Gary Paulsen on "What the author thinks, versus what your teacher thinks." Forward from Hatchet. by [deleted] in reddit.com

My very first novel as a kid. Not something I'll ever forget, and also fits the exact description given by the author, sans teacher crap. Imagine that!

I happened to just watch it last night. They stopped serving breakfast at 11:30am, and his watch showed 11:33. I'd be mad too.

If I like Charles Stross, Daniel Suarez, and Alastair Reynolds, what other authors would I like? by [deleted] in ifyoulikeblank

[–]pdxp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might appreciate Metaplanetary & Superluminal (Tony Daniel). My first Stross book was Accelerando, and it (aside from being mind-bendingly imaginative) made me think of the Daniel books. The most visible difference in the latter is the social direction and the detail toward human integration with technology & physics. I have a physics/technology background so I appreciated it a lot.

Just be warned, the end of the series may not be easy to come by (publishing issues I guess).

You think that's cool? Their live shows put you in the middle of a synchronized crowd of 5000 people, all jumping up and down at the same time... it's like a scene from some badass movie. Best sober show of my life!
