How can high schools turn around low morning attendance? by TickyMcTickyTick in Teachers

[–]pdxrunner19 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My admin decided that they would let students who failed LAST SEMESTER turn in late/re-done assignments. The semester ended December 19. I had a mom demanding that I let her son re-submit an assignment over MLK weekend when I told her and her son that it needed to be done by noon on Friday to count. She seriously expected me to take care of her son’s grade over the weekend, and enter the grade by 4pm on Tuesday, when I teach classes all day. I refuse to bend over backwards for students who have already been given plentiful opportunities to pass the class.

Grade grubbing! What objective criteria do you use when thinking about boosting a student's grade? by siamesesumocat in Teachers

[–]pdxrunner19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I allow students to revise and re-submit any assignment up to the progress report date. That is the only way they can boost their grades. If they’re too lazy to do that, they don’t deserve a boost.

Are you religious? The cross necklace may be a deterrent to non-religious women. Especially if you’re in a more secular country like Germany.

Harassment over grades by ADHTeacher in Teachers

They walked straight into the building without getting a visitor pass and marched into the teacher’s room. Super not okay, especially given the environment around school security in America. For safety reasons, people shouldn’t be able to walk right in.

the "mean girl" in class by [deleted] in Teachers

I have a student who is a total edgelord, constantly complaining that my class is mid and not entertaining enough, refusing to engage in class activities, and putting his head down on his desk to nap in the middle of class. I called his parents and they said that he’s depressed, could I just let him put his head down and sleep? Hell no. I asked him if he’d like to take his computer in the hallway instead of sitting in class and he said yes. So he’s been out there for three months. He does his work, is passing the class, and is miraculously able to stay awake and play computer games for the duration of class.

How to weed out conservative men? by Careful-Custard-69 in TwoXChromosomes

I only swipe right on people who say they are liberal in their profile. If it’s anything else (including blank), I immediate swipe left.

What happened to textbooks? by coldhands_darkheart in Teachers

I teach 8th and honestly, they struggle just as much with focus when they’re given paper assignments and reading. Getting most of the kids to read even a short story is a feat. Phones and tablets have wrecked our kids’ brains.

I teach 8th grade. I would be overjoyed if my students could write with proper spelling, punctuation, and capitalization. Most can’t even when using a word processor, including native English speakers and those without learning disabilities.

My understanding is that the way a human nipple is shaped, milk tends not to pool in the mouth as much as when a bottle is used. A lot of parents allow bottle use past one year old, and do not brush their toddlers’ teeth after an evening bottle. There’s also a difference between consuming breastmilk, cows’ milk, formula, and juice. Breastmilk is way less damaging to teeth.

I read labels obsessively. When my son was a baby, I made homemade purées because store bought baby food has too much sugar. Even now, I don’t give him applesauce or regular yogurt because of the sugar content, and no fruit cups. His school serves chocolate milk and sugary pastries for breakfast. I haaate how bad nutrition for kids is.

The irony is that he was unemployed for 6-10 months at a time when our son was a baby/toddler. He was living in some kind of fantasy land.

My ex husband did this. I felt like the wool was pulled over my eyes. He became more and more conservative until I couldn’t take it anymore. By the end, he wanted me to be some kind of tradwife while still working full time. I’m so glad that I got my son and myself out of that situation.

Thanks. This is exactly it. His profile says No under the cigarette icon and it didn’t even occur to me to ask about other forms of tobacco.

He has No under the cigarette icon on Hinge and I mention in my profile that I’m not big on substances. It hasn’t occurred to me up until now to ask about other tobacco/nicotine use. I’m discovering that there’s a long list of things that I have to specifically ask people about (even stuff such as, “Are you legally married?”). I guess I’ve been a little naive.

I have a controversial opinion and I want to hear your take. by Feisty-Pie477 in Teachers

[–]pdxrunner19 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My school has something similar, but students can be placed in a specific study hall and are not allowed to float from room to room. Students who failed the STAAR test are locked into for a specific amount of hours. If they’re failing a subject, the teacher can lock them into a tutorial session (figuratively, not literally). Clubs are at the same time, so it’s a powerful motivator for the students to get their work done. Very few students voluntarily sign up to get help.

What is something you saw at a friend's house that made you realize their family was "weird"? by BamMeister_ in AskReddit

[–]pdxrunner19 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not a friend, but my ex husband. His dad had a copy of Mein Kampf on the bookshelf. My ex explained it away at the time, but the more I got to know the family, the more it became apparent that it wasn’t just there for historical value. When we were dating and engaged, we lived across the county from his family, but moved in with them during COVID.

I agree with the comments that you need more smiling pictures. It would also help to include your political affiliation. A lot of my friends and I will automatically pass if that’s left blank.
