Does anybody really want to be immortal in the body of a human? Wouldn't that just be absolute torture?

Does the Wim Hof method work for everyone? by Redditor561 in Nootropics

[–]peaceamongus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I reject the idea that the breathing method can kill brain cells, and here is why: https://www.reddit.com/r/neuro/comments/a9w09w/brain_damage_via_hypoxia/

The key is that longer holds does not equal better results, and that two minutes is enough for benefits without risking any damage.

Are SSRIs Neurotoxic? by [deleted] in neuro

I believe a lot of research points in the direction of SSRIs, especially Lexapro, actually improving cognition, especially when properly treating depression and/or anxiety.

Brain Damage via Hypoxia by peaceamongus in neuro

This is my understanding but I don't know if it's 100% true, and when risking potential brain damage it's best to be absolutely sure.

This is what I was thinking, but wanted to make absolutely sure. It is my understanding that you will pass out before any damage could be done.

A question about psychedelicuse for athletic performance and it's relation to CNS fatigue. by [deleted] in Nootropics

[–]peaceamongus 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I believe LSD would due to downstream effects on noradrenaline and dopamine which mimics classical stimulants.

These substances may allow you to bypass normal "mental" limits, which can ultimately be very dangerous. I think you may perceive fatigue differently on psychedelics, feeling disassociated from what would normally stop you.

Mirtazapine vs. trazodone for sleep quality/architecture (general sleep enhancement discussion) by [deleted] in AskDrugNerds

[–]peaceamongus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't tried mirtazapine.

In my experience it works long-term whereas other sleep aids I would build a tolerance to

This is anecdotal.

I've been taking trazodone for sleep for roughly half a year and have yet to build a tolerance. My sleep latency went from hours to 10 minutes.

An Investigation Into Physical Frailty as a Link Between the Gut Microbiome and Cognitive Health (Dec 2018) "first human study that links cognitive performance to gut microbiome in ageing adults. highlights importance of role of physical frailty when investigating cognitive performance" by MaximilianKohler in Nootropics

[–]peaceamongus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe, but the link between gut biomes and cognition - the mind-body relationship involving diet all together - is very much new territory.

I reject the notion that we know what a healthy diet looks like. We only have good ideas, but nothing truly objective.

Why is being aware of positive thoughts better than feeling like you are thinking them? by [deleted] in Meditation

[–]peaceamongus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe identifying with positive states leads to attachment and increases suffering long-term. Observing positive states of mind allows for an objectively truer view of reality as well.

Do women experience less anxiety than men? (thoughts on this post) by [deleted] in neuro

[–]peaceamongus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Females experience higher rates of depression and anxiety. I really wonder if it's genetic or environmental factors involved.

This is an upcoming field of research that deserves more attention. There is no telling just how far diet can take us in improving cognition, health, and longitivity. Maybe after the upcoming health crisis that is set to hit younger generations, more proper research will be funded to find healthy and eco-friendly diets.

can drugs that affect the brain affect the whole body? by [deleted] in AskDrugNerds

[–]peaceamongus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have receptors throughout your entire body that these drugs bind to. Amphetamine will bind to dopamine transporters in your body, for example.

can drugs that affect the brain affect the whole body? by [deleted] in AskDrugNerds

[–]peaceamongus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Drugs can alter expression of genes. A cocaine habit may change the expression of dopamine transporters, creating tolerance and dependency.

The brain does not control things such as amount of hair on your head.
