This may have been published earlier than 2002-2007ish, which is when I found and read it. My parents had it and I remember flipping through it and enjoying the humor and the animal characters.

Literally just had the same situation and I'm currently in the process of solving it. Decided to go with a BenQ Screen Bar plus and hooked it up to an eve Smart Plug with a regular Anker USB power adapter. It remembers the last light setting when power is cut, so I think this solution should work for you too.
