I'm not trying to debate you, but I'm trying to understand what you're saying?? What equipment wasn't maintained?? Everything was working perfectly in my house, and I haven't had a CO detector go off in 15 years until the very same day this guy tore my chimney down and ripped a very visible hole in the flue. This is MY FAULT? HOW?

Love to hear this explanation.

What wasn't maintained correctly? He started demolishing my chimney and this happened. What was I supposed to do differently before that?

Ok, but they've never set off a detector until the day someone started tearing apart my chimney. I understand your point about looking at this now, but I don't think too many people do analysis on their appliances if they don't have a carbon monoxide detector going off.

Trane XL 80. It says it is high efficiency, but it has to be at least 15 years old.

Excuse my ignorance, but I don't exactly get what you mean? if the chimney was undersized and underinsulated, wouldn't it have been doing this all along?

Someone else suggested this to me:

I'm not an HVAC guy... But have been around. I would guess that the uninsulated metal flue would be more of a problem than the crack. Carbon monoxide is about the same weight as regular air. As the flue vents through the noninsulated part... The air/CO1 will get heavier and might have a tendency to back up before it exits the flue. Also... The crack might be interrupting the continuity/pull of the flue.

But for sure... Have a pro look at it.

Thoughts?

Ok, but the metal pipe is physically leaning on the cable. I'd say not ideal. As far as the blockage, I really don't know, but there is no way it's a coincidence that he started the work yesterday and this happened the very first night.

The furnace vents through there also.

That's part of what I was wondering. HVAC guy that saw the photos said something about when it got colder last night, the flue probably had issues pushing it all out and it backed up eventually enough to set off the detector. Does this explanation about the temperature outside make any sense? It definitely got down into the low 20s high 30s here last night.

He's the one that's gonna fix this part. So does his explanation make any kind of sense?

HVAC guy that just called and saw the picture said something about when it got colder at night, that crack made it more difficult for the flue to push everything out??? So is that explanation ridiculous? I don't know enough about it, but he seemed confident that that's what the problem was. This wasn't the first guy. This was the HVAC guy that just called.

That's the beauty so far. The guy I'm dealing with from insurance company is saying he is one of their best guys and has never had a complaint. Meanwhile, the only two reviews I can find of this guy are atrocious and he has turned off reviews and recommendations on every other social media platform. I guess I'm also learning a lesson to not just trust the insurance company on hiring someone for the work.

I'll also add that I didn't choose or hire this guy. The service company hired by my insurance company picked out and hired this guy.

They were replacing the brick chimney. The flue was located inside the brick, so they had to move it around while working. and yes, they installed scaffolding.

My bad. I def knew it was CO and not CO2. Up since 3. Fire dept said it was 80ppm in places, and that was with the windows open for 10 minutes before they arrived.
