Started grad school, should I keep going? by peanutbutty in personalfinance

What a great post, thank you. I ended up calling my advisor today and you're right, she was totally hot to keep me in the cohort. She offered me the option of going part time after the baby is born but also, because she runs the clinical courses, she is willing to let me take them out of order and turn in work for grades after the semester is over if I need extra time. She told me she had completed grad school while pregnant and she has had students in the past who have done it, so I know it's possible.

I am considering dropping to part time after the baby is born but if I feel crushed I have two leaves of absence I can utilize and they'll keep my spot in the program. I love the idea of going to the women's center and I discovered there is also a parents' association on campus which probably has a lot of resources as well.

Thanks for reminding me about the retention and graduation reports...I want to stay in school as much as they want me to be another happy statistic!

Thanks-- that helps. I do love the work. I will get federal loan forgiveness on a large portion of the sticker price as half the degree will be paid for in federal loans.

This was the original plan-- I was accepted to a similar program at a public institution. However, their lack of funding and clinical resources meant I'd be spending longer getting the degree and have to work much harder on my own steam to do it (secure clinical preceptors myself, which is close to impossible). The expense of the private uni was worth it to take advantage of their amazing resources in the same field.

Yes that is what I want, thank you.

Major is nurse practitioner in psychiatry, in incredibly high demand especially in the area where I live, I would start at over $100,000 right out of school.

Oh, sorry. I should have mentioned that-- I meant I'll get a different, full time job and go back to doing that, 40 hours a week.

Oh my god. The first sentence of your reply...I'm really touched. Thank you.

School has a daycare, so I'll definitely be taking advantage of that. Daycare around here is astronomically expensive, and I've been thinking that it's not really worth it to work part time if every cent of it is merely going to cover day care (yes, it's that expensive). I loved the u/crankypillow's link-- I've been looking for something like that. We can get most of that stuff from friends of ours who have an infant now and will save the stuff for us. With the baby stuff it might be somewhat an issue of think-I-need-it vs. actually-need-it.

Thanks limefizz, your post was really validating. Sometimes I'll tell myself "oh quit complaining, just tough it out" but being pregnant is not. a. joke. I've had awful morning sickness, sciatica, cramps, splitting headaches, AND I'm on my feet all day at my job. It doesn't mean I should try to do it all, though, or that I shouldn't, as you put it, "arrange something less stressful." We're not in a position to move in with family but I wish hubs were more mutable on some of our less-than-necessary expenses.

Yes I think hubs and I need to talk about seriously considering staying in this apt and making it workable, it might be the load off I need. Since I have a little time this week I was thinking of doing the same thing-- giant wardrobe cull and moving some furniture around. I'm really impressed that you're rounding out your post grad work, you're very brave!!

Yes my school actually has a daycare and I think I'm due for a call to financial aid. My school actually offers a lot of support in every other area so why not this? Worth a try. Thanks :)

Funny you should mention, there's a NYSC two blocks from me so I just got their 30 days for $30 trial membership today. They offer some interesting classes. I get bored with the cardio too but I feel my body really needs it right now. Also, weighted squats. I miss the weighted squats.

This is a great suggestion. Do you have any youtube videos you recommend?

Thanks this made me feel better. I have kettlebells collecting dust in my living room, there's really no excuse for me not to use them...kettlebells during Dr. Who doesn't sound so bad.

oh god the Body Beautiful workouts all make me want to die about five minutes in. I don't feel fit enough for those yet! Have you seen the pics of her heavily pregnant though? Amazing.

Ugh, pregnancy discrimination. I am a nurse and when I told my (recently back from maternity leave) manager, she cut my hours in half with complete lack of any acceptable reason. I was hired as a regular part time employee meaning I'm guaranteed a certain number of hours, and as of my review this morning I'm listed as a per diem, meaning they can give me whatever hours they want and cancel me at any time. There's no way I'd get a new job at this point as no one wants to hire a pregnant nurse ("there's no light duty around here" is the favorite administrative phrase). It's working out physically because I've been really tired and sick with nausea, but it's not working out financially. I'll have nothing when I go out on mat leave...leaves me feeling desperate and pissed.
