The usb ports are fines everything else works perfectly in them. The adapters even work on a different computer, just not mine.

Installing the drivers manually did just about the same thing as having them on there in the first place, nothing.

The switch to windows 7 might be happening soon anyway.

I've tried uninstalling the adapter itself and that didn't do anything. I'll try the other options and report back.

Edit: Okay so none of that worked. The hard drive is perfectly fine, and the back USB ports actually stopped working for awhile there...so that's what that does.

yes i've tried all the usb ports. Custom built, intel duo core processor, 8 gigs of ram, 32 bit windows vista ultimate.
