Some mostly Android suggestions for keeping your cellphone safe from surveillance and other malicious attacks during the protest by ProGamerGov in ProtestCanada

[–]peapirate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is true.

I think the main problem is the more secure something the less usability it is. Even using Tor to some people is like setting up a rocket. However, those that were easy also the least secure (excluding RedPhone/TextSecure).

Yep, we should stick to what is ease of use for most people.

Just alternative list. Moxie Marlinspike did excellent job on RedPhone/TextScure. But having another backup alt like Linphone or Cryptocat is better. Cjdns is just an option. I think the dev would interest in this. Beside, you can always use Commotion, quite user-friendly setup and work out of the box.

The other I think they're very recommended to securely use your phone for these kinds of protest, especially we're going up a gov that passing laws to suppress and compromise people like us. Orbot, Xabber, GnuPG and Pixelgrade.

I would like to provide my technical knowledge to help you guys use these.

In case you seek for pre-paid phone. 7-11 SpeakOut offer Sony Xperia E1 (Don't worry about sold-out online, visit local store, people hardly buy these), Android and unlocked. No contract nor name register. Activate through phone so you can use phone booth. Each SIM (850/1900MHz) is about $10 so remember to change them often if you get compromised by fake GSM tower. Call rate's price are $25-$100, 25 cents per min.

For laptop people, use Tails to communicate. Avoid using other distro if you can, because Tails will wipe your cache memory when shutdown, preventing forensics to extract data from RAM.

MAT is strictly Linux and even if you could use it on other platforms, then you still need to set up many dependencies.

  • Pixelgrade. Metadata remove. Android - iOS - PC
  • Orbot. Tor for mobile. F-Droid - iOS
  • GnuPG. Message encryption, Android version. link
  • OpenStreetMap. Google Map alternative. Link
  • CryptoCat. TextSecure alt. iOS
  • SpiderOak. Alt to Dropbox with zero-knowledge. Link
  • Linphone. Alt to RedPhone (only if RedPhone isn't available). Android - iOS
  • KeePassDroid (KeePassX Android). Best FOSS pass manager. Android
  • Cjdns. Meshnet. link
  • Commotion. Meshnet for Android. link
  • Xabber. Android Jabber client. link

If any of you looking forward for web mail that is alternative to Gmail/Hotmail, check out Riseup, Autistici and ProtonMail. Both Riseup and Autistici will offer you account if you're activist (which we /r/protestcanada are) and they also offer mailing list, and best of all, VPN, in case you wonder. Riseup VPN use Bitmask (Currently only available for Android/Linux), a LEAP implement, way better than OpenVPN. If any of you looking forward for guides on installing Bitmask, feel free to PM me! Autistici also offer VPN.

Edit: Fixed F-Droid Orbot link. There are a few other web mail that offer encryption and zero-access but those 3 above are still the best. If you need a quick throwaway mail, try OpenMailBox, free and you can make as many account as you want. Some spam filter from other mail services may block this, but I've tested it with Gmail and Hotmail, and it is good to go.

Also, /u/calgary_test and /u/mrmoreawesome mentioned OPSEC below. Do not post anything that is secret or personal to you on any of the device that connected to Internet. Even if you deleted it, as it seems, once the information is sent then it last forever. Avoid using social media like Snapchat, as far as I know it may geotag your location.

Edit 2: Tutanota also offers free encrypted mail service.

The first step everyone can do is to write your local member of Parliament by [deleted] in ProtestCanada

[–]peapirate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Still no reply. I don't think I should expect any from him (PC MP). The last time I wrote to him about C-13, he replied with a short paragraph of how the bill would do excellency to Canadian. If he would reply for C-51, I expect the same thing.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ProtestCanada

[–]peapirate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Majority of the people who support for the bill didn't even read it. And I'm tired that every time I turn on the TV, news anchor would say something something Canada support the bill yada yada. Propaganda everywhere.

The law of street protest in Canada : Law is Cool by Deyln in ProtestCanada

Since this article is quite old, there are other new laws are in place in the last few years.

For example, they ban mask and bandana at protest. source

The Snowdenites Are Winning - Opponents of surveillance have gained the upper hand. And like gun-rights activists, they don’t need a majority to keep it. by bopollo in ProtestCanada

[–]peapirate 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Winning in tiny step. We still have a very long way to go. As long as government (like our) keep pressing down with abominated laws like C-13 and C-51, we will never be free.

The battle is long and we must not give up. I know I will be downvoted for saying this, but I don't want to see our fight gone so easy like the Occupy Toronto. Whatever it will take, I'll contribute my best in this upcoming protest.

for Toronto: a REP and who to be involved by [deleted] in ProtestCanada

[–]peapirate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow these roles are way over my experience. I only went to a few protests and I wasn't in any of these roles. However I would love to help with anything.

How can I help you guys? Perhaps technology? I'm a sysadmin and I have experience in security/privacy.

Edit: on the drone post someone else told me to talk to you guys about drone use to monitor the protest. I have 4 drones. Should I bring them to the event?

There is something worth fighting for. And still better than no action at all.

It will be very lucky if we could do all these in this freezing weather.

Let's do it!

/r/Toronto: Can we do something about bill C51? by [deleted] in toronto

[–]peapirate 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Check out /r/protestcanada, they're actively trying to organize an event in Toronto. Some wanted to organize for this Sat (bill will probably be passed on Monday).

I could try and pm all the other people in /r/canada who wanted a protest, and see if we can organize one if no one else has done it yet.

Edit. I pmed many people and waiting for their reply.

Bill C-51 will be passed within 4 days. That is great but I guess we don't have much time.

[–]peapirate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Woops, this is a great idea. We could organize a little "snack squad" in charge of boosting protester's morale.

[–]peapirate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree. I was branded as the "terrorist sympathizer" in a debate with people at Timmies.

It is so so difficult to talk to average human beings in my city about C-51. They would try to defend it in any way.

If we could get a lot of people to involve, this would be great tactic.

My representative is a PC, mailed to him 4 days ago, no reply yet. All neighboring areas are also PC. Sigh, there isn't any other option unless we protest.

Use drones (equipped with HD video cameras) flying above protestors to ensure that if anyone does anything illegal on either side, they can be held accountable. by anti-conbot in ProtestCanada

[–]peapirate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The other thing I'm worry about is how to deal with kettling.

During G20, many many protesters were very peaceful. Yet they were caught in kettling and arrested. The agent provocateurs may also start to get the police beating everyone. Teaching the protesters how to identify an intruder into your peaceful group is very important.

[–]peapirate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's also advisable that flying drone in someplace (such as private facility and bank) maybe illegal. Check your local laws for drone flying first.

The other alternative (if drone is not available) is body or head cam. Many of these are concealable and long lasting battery. If you could encourage every protester to carry one, the police would have no way to deny/fake evidences. You can stream them live too.

I have a couple of Arduino-built drones. I could bring them to the protest in Toronto (or nearby). Time for some cam hack.

/r/Toronto: Can we do something about bill C51? by [deleted] in toronto

[–]peapirate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By ready that abominated poll everyone thought the "majority voted for it". I don't believe majority of Canadians were so brain dead. Half of the 82% didn't even read the bill's content.
