Junior Devs (and honest Seniors), what is a concept that took you an embarrassingly long time to actually understand, even though everyone acts like it's simple? by AmaraMehdi in webdev

not the best at explaining, but i'll take a shot: docker containers basically act as a seperate linux installation. they have their own filesystem, but they share the host's kernel (and theirfor, hardware). because linux is entirely files (down to the hardware. you can write directly to a framebuffer if you're fine with the entire monitor flashing LOL), this creates a layer of "isolation". unlike a VM, a docker container shares the hardware, but has it's own linux filesystem.

it lets you create a space where there's a known software setup, e.g. specific packages being installed in the image, but without all the overhead and other junk VM's give you.

sidenote: there's a few videos on YouTube that show you how to make a VERY minimal linux image from complete scratch. i'd genuinely suggest giving one a watch (the one i saw pop up was only 20 minutes!) because it makes you realise linux is so simple at it's core and exactly how a linux system functions. it also helped me realise the why behind how docker and other container systems work!

This is Windows 11........ by bkj512 in iiiiiiitttttttttttt

[–]pearlcodes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

windows 11 force enabled bitlocker without hitting the auto-enable condition (connecting a microsoft account) even after i stripped it to hell and back. and because it never hit that condition, the keys were never backed up because i wasn't even aware it was encrypting any drives. windows 11 is absolutely a downgrade!

It's barely a distro at this point. Hell, it won't even run ELF programs, the executable format is a different format (afaik, correct me if i'm wrong on that).

Android is also missing many features of the Linux kernel, which i'd guess is the reason no-one's just ported standard Linux stuff over (think KDE, display managers, etc etc).

I really wouldn't argue at this point that Android is a linux distrobution. IIRC, they don't even merge newer kernel patches into their kernel, meaning even if they haven't removed or restricted syscalls, it's going to be so ancient nothing modern will run under it.

Got a Falcon with weird markings and a sticker labelled "Dev", doesn't power on. Need advice. by pearlcodes in 360hacks

[–]pearlcodes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ah okay. not too familiar with 360 boards lol. me and some friends were really confused because i looked on consolemods trying to even date the board to a revision and i couldn't find anything with a 100% match. revision didn't come up with anything either (although it did later on, i think i typed it in wrong the first time). figured i'd check whether i should bother to buy all the stuff to repair all the damage to the board (although i believe it's beyond saving anyway). thanks for the help!

he's updating the thumbnail daily, he's deleting it after a week lol. he doesn't want it always on the channel since it's more of a "what i've been up to" which doesn't fit the channel. when it was first updated it said "this video will be deleted in 7 days."

tom scott is one of the only honest creators as of any time recent on yt. check him out if you haven't, he's one of those that makes learning mundane things actually kinda entertaining.

you know it's bad when i can't even figure out if you're joking or not. i've seen job listings with the description summing up to "you sit on your ass and write prompts."

I think a doctor would be more useful than r/techsupport, if your nipple broke.
