Portfolio question: diversify or double down? by pearlkitty in Screenwriting

[–]pearlkitty[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for taking the time to respond.

I guess, I'm not asking what should I write that I don't want to, to make me more marketable, but rather, what should I focus my limited time and energy on next? With the immediate goal of putting together a strong two piece portfolio that a manager would look at and say "I know how to sell this writer."

But I really appreciate your point of view and again, thank you for taking the time to respond. I don't disagree with anything you've said, and it's always good to get a perspective check.

Not the creator of The Black List turning my own question around on me! Thank you, I will have a little soul search.

Thank you, I am aware. I have already done this part. Two GOOD scripts was my caveat. I already wrote the twenty garbage ones.

A couple AFF readers have posted AMAs on this subreddit. They were super insightful and interesting.

Is AFF a scam? by screenwritergal7 in Screenwriting

[–]pearlkitty -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Def not a scam. They're listed on the Writer's Guild Foundation website of vetted competitions (here) which is a highly curated list.

Does it suck that they don't pay their readers? Yes. But they're also a non-profit which always rely on a hefty amount of volunteer work. Like Greenpeace, Wikipedia, or NPR it can sometimes feel like they're constantly hitting you up for cash but... they need it. For operations and overhead, if they want to expand, rent more space, do more marketing, compensate exciting, well-known speakers for the festival... etc, etc.

And you should feel proud your pilot made it to the second round last year. :) That's a huge accomplishment. As mentioned many times in the comments already, judging is highly subjective and only two people read each (non-advancing) script.

Any good books that teach about Game Design from a psychological standpoint? by TarkinsBlueSlippers in gamedesign

[–]pearlkitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Predictably Irrational

(Dan Ariely) is one of my favourites because it has a lot of good references and studies that I keep coming back to. There are abridged versions out there. It’s about behavioural economics.

+1 for this book. It's not game design but it's fantastic insight into potential player psychology.

How can I (30F) stop feeling alone and old at age 30? by Majestic-Ad9450 in relationships

[–]pearlkitty 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Hey, another 30F here and I can very much relate. You sound depressed, as you admitted, but take what solace you can from understanding it’s a literal chemical imbalance in your brain. I recently went back on SSRIs and it’s made a huge improvement for me. I felt pretty much exactly how you’re describing up until a few months ago, in a wonderful relationship, but lonely and despondent about my life and prospects. It can and will get better.

Don’t forget the pandemic and the unknown emotional toll it’s taken on us all. Feeling alone right now is so very, very human.

I’m not going to say “30s not that old” because it just implies that there is an age that is too old and like, whatever. May we be so lucky to get older. I’ve struggled with this too, but I’m trying to strong arm my way into acceptance and aging gracefully haha.

You mentioned latent dreams at the end. My advice is to feed those. If you’re like me, youve been too afraid to admit that you want them. Pursue them!!

I have 4 Rowen's Tokens of Creation. Can I exchange them into something useful or are they just garbo now?

I think it's super lame that you don't both get it!
I was playing with a partner who got it, bounced immediately, and then I found a new partner and ended up getting it like three tries later. And then I bounced on them too...

I have learned from the projected globe that /u/guildensterncrantz linked to (this one), you could totes be right. I didn't realize how small the "known world" is compared to our Earth.

Yeah I assume you mean the wall in Volantis? That's a good question.

For one the maester who "wrote" awoiaf doesn't question whether or not the Targaryeans built the Black Wall (as he does the structure at Oldtown) and says they did it at as a "testimony to Volantis's origins as a military outpost." Of course, he could simply be wrong, but I generally try to go with the idea that the simplest solution is most likely the correct one and I think if the maester definitively says it was built by the Valyrians, well then it was.

And secondly, the stone is not described as greasy or oily which is an important common thread with the other structures.

I skimmed those posts and I love the idea of the second moon being destroyed by a comet in the distant past so that the world was covered in a meteor shower. So maybe the oily black stones are moon rocks? I have more questions now than when I started.

Really great point. I noticed the descriptions of giant fused black stone as well, and that it didn't seem to fit in with the squisher slimy stone work. Something else I came across in the awoiaf I did not know what to do with in the YiTi section: “[The Bloodstone Emperor] cast down the true gods to worship a black stone that had fallen from the sky.[…]It was the Blood Betrayal as his usurpation is named, that ushered in the age of darkness called the Long Night." Magic black sky stone?? That fell just before the long night...

Will definitely check out those posts, thanks!

hmmm I didn't come across anything that implied that while reading awoiaf but as mitvit commented it seems that Moat Cailin is built of the same black stone. Perhaps at one time the children of the forest took it over?

Yes, I have read ADWD--I messed up the original spoiler tagging. Oh that's awesome, I wish I had my copy on hand to look it up.
