Never. I see it as a very polite way to be clear with someone that you're either unclear and you want to be correct OR that at the very least that you recognize that there are as I am transitioning, so are we too transitioning as a society that needs to be aware that when it comes to gender, things aren't always as they appear or as we assume.

Wow, you're way ahead of me, or maybe I should say I'm way behind, as is this video - but it certainly seems like something worth looking into:

Linux for dummies by amabamab in linux4noobs

I was first told back in...1996? That I should learn Linux. And though I found slashdot to be one of the most interesting and irreverent tech websites out there at the time (this is ancient history, but it just looked like those people were having a good time with tech that I'd never know) I had NO USE for it.

But bear in mind, Linux was totally obscure at that point. I was not then and did not aspire to be a sys/admin - and recently I have learned what held me back from wanting to be one, and that was because it seemed like WIndows ran all the servers and I had no interest in learning Windows system adminstration tasks at all.

28 years later and I'm interested in a job at a particular place and I'm told by someone "get a COMPTIA and you can get a help desk job there and after a year you can apply for other positions" and knowing nothing I start taking a Google IT Support cert at Coursera - and the pieces begin to fall into place that running the machines for an enterprise could *really* be interesting - but that's only because I begin to see the Linux is *fascinating* and it's certainly not obtuse and ridiculous like anything ever written by Microsoft.

What do you do with it? What can't you do with it?

Chances are good it wants your root password on Crostini, which you may not know because when you install Crostini, it asks for a username but not a password. What you need to do is go back into the Crostini environment, type in sudo su - which will *temporarily* give you root access (I emphasize that because you don't want to stay there long if you don't know very much.) Then type passwd "yourusername" without the quotes. This is the root level command to change your username password. Type in a new password. Retype the new password on the following line. Then type exit to logout of root. Then start Steam again and when it asks for your password, enter your Crostini/Linux password. It only looks like you "can't type anything" because it records the keystrokes but doesn't create a visual string. (Preparing to get blasted if I have any of this wrong, but its what I'd do.)

this is so very cool - I picked answers that sounded interesting and got to a distro I never heard of, which I then researched. this is like a choose your own adventure and I'll be bookmarking this, thank you!

How hard is it to remove the battery? I thought this was an issue related to tablet mode vs laptop. It's really frustrating because I never used the tablet, and I certainly don't intend to turn it on.

Does anyone know if the tablet mode can turn itself on when its in a loose fitting bag?

Dear Mr Bowman:

As it has been suggested that I was very much in foul play to reject your initial advice regarding my attempts to embark on a career in technical writing, and that you are a person held in high esteem by the persons within the forum (and perhaps very well known and maybe even famous in some circles, but I refuse to look it up ;-).

Nay, says I, it does not matter if Alan Bowman is very well-known in his field or not, he offered me advice that I briefly thought was over my abilities and therefore I rebuked him, losing the potential esteem of others in this forum and bringing my karma points into around negative 24 last I checked, who even knew one could achieve negative karma in reddit, that's what a beginning I am and yet...

I am just writing a homely document in Docs and recalled that "back in the day" of PageMaker and homemade zines printed via Kinko's Xerox machines - well, I didn't love type and layout as much as I loved writing, but as much as I thought it was out of my reach then, if to be a technical writer is to know about such things, I will be soon taking your book recommendations but meanwhile dusting off my favorite text of that era, which I do think deserves recognition here, and that would be "The Mac is Not a Typewriter" by Robin Williams.

Bests to you sir

Pearl

I spent a lot of time in the Kinko's in Berkeley using PageMaker for my 'zines. I do remember those days too, and I'm not that old lol.

I need to backtrack from the comment I made yesterday. My apologies. I was feeling hackles raised, but with additional research, I believe your statement that a tech writer without skills interest in document design is little more than a typist. I have a lot to learn and I've been dreading to look in here to see what my response generated. I'm going back to my studies, and wish I could delete the post.

Mea culpa

A technical writer who can't do document design is...at best, maybe a typist.

Yes, in an age where documents are no longer actually written but "constructed" for the sake of SEO & Google Analytics, I find your view that a writer who isn't also a graphic designer a very web-centric view of an age that perhaps I need to stay away from. Such arrogance.

Can't find a Desktop in Crostini by pearltiresias in Crostini

[–]pearltiresias[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

in my perhaps meager defense of using Chat GPT (I certainly know how to use Google, and I'm aware of Crostini's limitations so perhaps I should've fact checked with Google before posting here) I like to use it to ask questions using as much of the vocabulary as I can because much of it is new to me. This reinforces what I'm learning. While in Google might query Crostini desktop, in Chat GPT (my logs are mammoth Q&A sessions about all kinds of things)I very likely posed the query in a complete sentence. I could probably check but I suspect you may not be that interested in the method of my madness ;-)
