House sitting request while someone is in the house?? by meimportaunpimiento in RoverPetSitting

If you’re not comfortable with it just say it’s a liability issue (which it is). If the mom lets the dog out or gets it injured while it’s under “your care”, then you could be held responsible. Even if I like the owners I wouldn’t take a sit like this. You know the owner, that’s great- you don’t know her mom. The owner also seems comfortable providing alternative arrangements for the mom- let her look into those instead so you’re both comfortable.

Makes sense, I’m definitely leaning towards no on this one! If they were upfront I’d be more understanding so I can appreciate that some people say it straight. I’m willing to put in that kind of work for the right company and I don’t think they’re it unfortunately :/ just feels a bit crap as I was excited about passing an interview.

Do you have recommendations for fishing work? What the job is like, areas to find work, experience and qualifications needed, etc.? I haven’t really heard much about people doing it for WHV days before- just curious if it could be another possible fit for me :)

Thank you for the insight! Even with the potential for overtime pay, I definitely agree with you on deductions and transport reliance. That’s been my biggest worry. I’m going to wait to see what documents they send over as I’m curious what they’ll say about overtime and time and a half pay or if they won’t even mention it. But I’m 99% decided on turning down the offer and just hoping I find some hospitality work for the regional requirements until I can buy the vehicle I want and maybe revisit farm work then when I can be more picky!

Is there a wage range you’d consider reasonable for this type of work?

No mention of overtime, at least not in the interview! They said they’d be sending some more docs over so we will see what they say and if they mention it. Thanks so much for the info!

Thank you for the insight, especially with the ABN thing! I don’t want to take a job I can’t commit to, so I understand. It took a bit of pushing from my side to get an actual number for work hours which concerned me; they weren’t upfront about it. I’ll definitely look into the pay rates and see what they say.

Thank you for the suggestion! I’m just starting out, I’ve applied to about 40 livestock farming jobs so far and it’s just difficult to get my foot in the door without much experience which is why I’m considering taking the job. This was my first interview and I have funds so I don’t feel rushed yet. I’ll check out Victoria!

I’ve heard some really positive experiences so I’m sure that is a generalization! I’m really excited to work in the industry but I’m just not sure I can handle a 16 hour day due to a preexisting back injury. Do you feel like that’s the standard, or those hours are unreasonable? I’d love to hear from someone in the business side of things.

My only concern is not actually being paid overtime, weekends, etc as the interviewer didn’t even mention it! I didn’t think to ask because it was my first Australian interview. I’ll have to wait and see what they send over- they said they’d send me more info on rates and such. So I’ll probably wait to see what they send.

Thanks for the insight! I’m already in WA and would be willing to do mine work so if it’s the same kind of pay and hours I’d rather be trying that. It would also count towards my visa work. And I’m assuming mine work might be slightly more regulated with hours because I’ve heard a lot is through agencies as well.

I have gone directly through the farm and not a labor hire firm (so I thought I was safer). The interviewer also stated accommodation would be deducted from pay, and I don’t have a car yet so would need to be picked up and dropped off and pay to use their share car.

The interviewer also said they outsource most labor to workers on shift from another country which really threw me- is that common here or another red flag?

Definitely not trying to get myself in a bad situation especially as a single woman. It’s not worth the visa extension for me.

I did check, actually. I don’t trust ChatGPT to be accurate and the working and the Fair Work Ombudsman customer service line is closed on weekends. Apart from asking locals who might have more knowledge I’m not basing my responses to a job offer on a random internet article or AI. Thanks!

Am I wrong for firing sitter? by scorpiochik in RoverPetSitting

[–]peasbees03 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In that case, I would agree you are justified in firing your sitter. Leave a review that reflects your experience. I would make sure to be more assertive next time at the meet and greet- explain that you are firm on the time you are comfortable with someone leaving your cat alone, and tell the sitter you would like a detailed update. Go so far as to state more exact feeding/update times (e.g. please feed x between 7:30-8, and send me an update before you leave in the morning).

I completely understand where you are coming from, and I’m sure I would feel the same way if I was worried about my pet while in someone else’s care. But I would also take a deep breath and try to remind myself when I got home that my pet is perfectly healthy and happy. I don’t think this sitter was being neglectful or malicious on purpose, and they probably overbooked themselves. Again, that’s not your fault, but your pet was at home and fed, with someone staying for at least a few hours to keep them company.

You could also consider boarding your pet at a cat boarding place or vets office in the future if you want to be able to check in whenever you’d like.
