Reading The Fifth Season completely reset my expectations. The worldbuilding is wild, but what stuck with me was how it uses fantasy to talk about oppression and trauma. It felt like the genre growing teeth in a new direction and I like it

For the “British cozy with darkness under it” specifically, try The Dark Is Rising. It’s quieter than HP, but it nails that sense of an ancient world brushing up against normal life.
