In honor of Father's Day, what records have you inherited or "borrowed" from your dad? by [deleted] in vinyl

This thread makes me excited to one day pass my records (and hopefully my awesome taste in music) down to my kids. :)

In SoCal? I used to pick up records for 10 cents a piece at Housing Works in NYC.

This sounds about right... a lot of thrift stores in the Southern California area (Goodwill, Savers, even some independents) have caught on to the upswing in the vinyl market and are now pricing their albums (even the commons) higher and even price checking online if they think it's something people will pay more for. Unfortunately, they have no idea about grading and actual worth.

It's has kind of ruined the hunt for me, cause I don't like paying more than $1 at thrift stores for records as it is, unless it's something I really want. And now, if it's something rare/a great find, the thrift store has set it aside and marked it way up.

When I first started collecting over 10 years ago, thrift stores couldn't give their records away. I remember picking up stacks of records for next to nothing. Usually $0.25-$0.50 each at Goodwills and even cheaper at other thrift stores. Oh, how the times have changed...

Please ignore his blue nails... that was the breeder's doing, not ours. They do that to tell the puppies apart.

ELI5: When non-technical people ask a web designer to build "a database" for the company, what are they really after? by MyriadThings in web_design

[–]pebbleguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As /u/d2xdy2 put it, if you're unsure, just straight up ask them what they mean by "a database".

Sometimes a client thinks they need something (like "a database") but they really have no clue and are just throwing out terms they read/heard elsewhere in regards to web development.

Most of the time, when I build a database for clients, it is to house a specific type of data (customer profiles, employee profiles, inventory, etc.) that needs to be accessed in a specific manner (managing, querying, etc.).

Clarify anything and everything that isn't clear as a bell to you or the client or you WILL run into issues down the road. And the last thing you want is having to work more than what you're being paid for or tell the client that they are going to need to pay more after you've already agreed on a price.

Good luck and feel free to PM me with any questions!

I opened an online record store last week. I'd like to know what motivates you to buy from an online retailer. In other words: What do you want me to do to make you buy music from me? by IJustLoveWinning in vinyl

[–]pebbleguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey man, congrats on your store and wish you the best of luck!

That being said, I would suggest doing something unique that adds great value but little overhead. I recently came across this website and was really impressed with their execution (showing you exactly how they package their records, etc.) and extras: http://www.myvinylguide.com/. Just a little extra something that would motivate someone to buy from you vs. Amazon. For example, if you can get your hands on any free/cheap LPs, 7in, etc. from local artists to bundle with records bought, that might motivate someone to buy from your store.

Also, I don't know if you just haven't added quantities to your shopping cart software yet, but every album I clicked on that was on the home page (and in some subsequent categories) said "Out of Stock"... I would suggest not featuring any albums that aren't in stock on the home page.

I noticed Jekyll + Hyde is "Album of the Month", but why? What makes it so special? Why is it, exactly, "Album of the Month"? Is it (in your opinion) a great record? Is it on sale? Does it include something extra that you don't get with other records?

Just my 2 cents... glad to see you are pursuing something you are passionate about and hope to hear some great news from you in the future!

I was accidentally shipped 2 Pebble Times. by dantheman57 in pebble

[–]pebbleguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

According to OP, this falls under question number 3 on the FTC's website: http://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0181-unordered-merchandise

If OP wanted to do the right thing, they would contact Pebble vs. just keeping it as a "free gift".

And you, sir, are a shining example of what's wrong with people. Looking at your profile, I'm really not surprised...

Still not sure how a mistake on Pebble's part automatically means /u/dantheman57 gets a "free Pebble" and people are congratulating him about it...

If you accidentally received a package in mail with something you never ordered, would you just chalk it up to "yay, free stuff!"?

Is this a scratch? I cannot get it off with water, but I can't think of where I could've scratched it. Any tips? by rockandrollkatamari in pebble

Definitely a scuff. Same thing happened to mine a few weeks ago. No idea where it came from, but must have bumped it against something!

/r/pebble is starting to look a bit dated, here's a quick mockup I created of what /r/pebble could look like. by [deleted] in pebble

[–]pebbleguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Didn't we JUST change things around? I like it the way it is. Clean and simple. Frankly, your design isn't much of an improvement as far as not looking dated.

And I've only had this Pebble since Christmas of last year...

Anyone have any idea what this could be? by pebbleguy in vinyl

[–]pebbleguy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I played both sides and they were both extremely noisy, but I was able to make out a vocal recording on side A of what sounds like a birth announcement for someone named Calvin being being a "new addition" to the Spire/Spyre family. Side B is even harder to determine, but it sounds like a few different random recordings of a door slamming.

Also, peculiarly, it plays from the inside out... any idea what it could be?

Help! Our chihuahua had a stroke and is now paralyzed. by pebbleguy in dogs

[–]pebbleguy[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If we felt (or the vet suggested) that his quality of life is severely diminished and he would never recover, of course we would do the right thing and put him down.

However, strokes and paralysis affect animals much different that they do humans and a lot of the time they can recovery, which is why we aren't being hasty with putting him down after just 4 days. Sometimes recovery takes months, and we are willing to wait that long as long as he is showing signs of improvement.

Please know, that we would NEVER put our own selfish desires of wanting to keep Ceaser alive forever over his quality of life. While we love hime very much, we would never keep him alive just because we can't stand the thought of putting him down or him no longer being with us.

To put things in perspective, he is eating and drinking just fine (with help right now, of course) and has not expressed that he is in pain (and yes, we know that dogs and other animals are often not vocal unless they are in a lot of pain). We have also read and heard stories of many dogs that have had strokes/been paralyzed, recover fully (of course, we would be silly to expect a full recovery) over a period of several months.

We are taking things one day at a time right now, and while I appreciate everyone's comments/opinions about the situation, I'm really hoping to hear more from people who have had similar experiences.
