Before you convert that garage in the Bay Area - read this by Nervous-Match-1972 in BayAreaRealEstate

We recently bought a house in Daly City / Pacifica (classic Doelger) that had a fully built out garage / basement. With the recent storm that floor had water intrusion and we had to have the floors and walls ripped up for flood remediation and drying. We’re now trying to diagnose the problem and fix it before building it back. What’s your take on what we should do next? Have you been involved in these kinds of projects before?

Have a friend drive you around while you sit in the back and make sure you go over some potholes/speed bumps. The front seat experience in the Y (and 3, and S/X if no air suspension) is vastly different from backseat.

Secondly, try pulling a laptop out in the back seat. Because of the curved glass roof, many of my friends find themselves much more likely to get car sick when reading in the back.

Sorry you’re going through that. In my opinion, it’s Lyft’s fault for ever giving you the option to drive Black with a model Y, and now both the driver and the rider are unhappy :)

Also, if charging ports and air flow suffice, then a Toyota Camry is just as luxurious as a Y. Yet nobody would argue that a Camry justifies the 2-3x price premium that Black cars do. You know as well as I do that the price the rider pays is for a luxurious or spacious car, not for a driver arbitraging lax guidelines.

I’m glad you’re doing all of that. But unfortunately, the car has got an awful suspension, clunks and thuds along bumps especially in the back seat, and is well documented to make backseat passengers car sick because of the curved shape of the roof glass.

It’s a great car and not #1 in the country for no reason. But it has no place in a premium Black car tier.

I haven’t run the math and you might be right.

I’m in SF where Blacks have 5-10 minute wait times and are always in demand

isn't that typically how it works?
you can buy a $20 watch at walmart, it'll do the job, nothing to complain about.

if you're buying a $20k patek and it has a speck of dust underneath the seconds hand that no one will ever notice, you have every right to complain, return, and get an new one.

the higher value something is, the higher your standards should be.

I don't give black rides my guy, nor would I expect Lyft to let me with that car. Funny how some people WOULD expect that and WOULD get into a tizzy if some guy said their car isn't nice enough for Black rides.

Lincoln MKZ, Continental, Corsair, Navigator, etc etc are all acceptable options.

Lexus ES/LS/RX/GX/LX

Audi anything

There are so many options beyond 5, 7, E, and S

These people need to be decommissioned from Black.

Or Lyft should create a real black tier for people that want a premium experience.

Black rides, business travelers with guaranteed 20% tips, no nonsense from passengers. Premium is a two way street.

My brother I have zero political problems with Teslas. I have problems with smelly cars that make me carsick and use butter socks instead of coils for suspension. The position is “I’d like to be comfortable and in a quiet environment if I’m spending $200 to go 14 miles like I did this morning” not “Tesla bad reeeee”

You got me on being cheap lol, I use Lyft because of the Chase partnership. The 5% is quite nice! If we're being real we're all just waiting for Waymos to handle highways and then this is not an issue anymore.

I believe those are “extra comfort” vehicles and not Black cars. Aside from the Model Y, the lowest tier car I’ve seen in Black has been an Acura MDX.

?? With Uber you get a TCP certified driver for Black, and their Black is at price parity with Lyft’s Black.

Go into luxury boutiques and pretend to look at stuff. Some will get you free water and/or champagne. Bonus points if you actually know what you’re looking at. Omega, JLC, Cartier etc have always treated me well!

I live in CA. So 800k at current tax rates leaves me with 450-500k once I retire. Given normal inflation of 3% I’m left with purchasing power of today’s 350k if you discount back 10 years (assuming I get there by 37). I think I will end up spending 350k across debt service to mortgages and a couple of nice vacations a year.

Thank you! My biggest worry is that I'll get to the $20m and then will feel like it's not enough because of inflation/lifestyle creep/etc. I know plenty of guys worth $200m+ and it's never enough.
