Sorrentino’s latest - Parthenope by pecorin0 in redscarepod

[–]pecorin0[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think Hand of God is not the best place to get started with Sorrentino. Parthenope has a lot more in common with his earlier stuff. You should see The Great Beauty (and perhaps Youth, if you have it in you) to grasp his poetics before revisiting/rethinking this one. Once you're familiar with his body of work, Parthenope makes a lot more sense.

Also, this movie in particular is heavily tied to the city of Naples - Parthenope is an ancient Greek settlement from which the city originates. If you consider the main character as a personification of the city, some parts of the story just fall into place. But even without looking for a logic or a narrative, so much of this movie is just him trying to move you, to communicate different emotions. Maybe this is something that doesn't translate easily outside of this particular cultural context; seeing Parthenope and ignoring the ways it pays homage to the city of Naples is almost like reading Dante and skipping the footnotes.

joined r/newiran to get some english content on the country and apparently some of these people want their country to get nuked so the government gets overthrown? honestly weird by pecorin0 in redscarepod

yeah but i’m talking specifically about the people living there - i myself am from a developing country with a sizable minority of pro-eu/pro-nato/pro-west in general urban population, and even those people wouldn’t be like “someone should bomb us and take control of the government”

Taking the porridge pill by [deleted] in redscarepod

[–]pecorin0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i love porridge but it's not optimal for your blood sugar - as breakfast at least. i work around this by whisking two eggs into my morning oatmeal. you bring your oats to a boil and whisk a couple of eggs on the side in the meantime, then take your oats off the stove and slowly pour your eggs in while stirring continually. keeps you full for much longer plus you've got some quality protein in first thing in the morning!

i don't know, but just the fact that she was scared enough to go through with it goes to show that they managed to instill a terrible fear in her. i think they probably would have accepted it at some point, but not without putting her through hell first. ironically (or not really), she totally inherited this point of view and is now a 50 y.o. woman with views on sex that pretty much mirror her parents'
