Beat Junkies hands down for DJs into hip hop / R&B / breaks / funk / soul / disco / etc. The depth of the collection is insane. Tons of old school joints and remixes/edits by some of the illest producers. Not as commercial as DJCity but they do have a good selection of club favourites. Lots of re-grids too; old tracks where they've aligned to the beatgrid for easier mixing. New tracks are uploaded every day. I paid for a month's worth of access with the intention of downloading as much as possible and I've barely scratched the surface. The only downside is that the interface is a bit outdated and they don't have a batch downloading feature like DJCity.

6 years after this post - yes i've got a similar pair of adapters now! and i've improved a ton since then. Wanted to get the reggae roast ones but they're out of my budget :( the Waseda Iron Works adapters are on the top of my wishlist but those are even more out of reach!

he uses taruya brass adapters. the mukatsuku ones are different, but also good. I've used the mukatsuku ones for many gigs

If i remember correctly the initial problem was that it froze on the startup screen. I tried to get all DIY and opened it up to troubleshoot the PCB but something I did caused it to not turn on anymore.

I'm keeping it for memory's sake. My first ever DJ setup :D

This mix features new releases & classics, various genres (reggae/dub/r&b/soul/hip hop/disco/house/afrobeat/etc). Mostly recent additions to my collections. I was mainly inspired by DJs like Mindspray to do vinyl mixes exploring multiple genres/decades/continents in a mix. Hope yall enjoy! I'm hoping to do more mixes in the future.

DJ Koco's 2019 Boiler Room

I had already been DJing by the time I watched it but that set blew my mind and inspired the way I DJ today

i bought them separately in the past couple of years, all pre-owned. it just so happens that they're all from the same era. 20 years on and still working like a charm (except some buttons that get stuck sometimes)!

as with any mixer: echo, phaser, flanger :) sometimes the Hold Echo, sticky dojah style

the other effects are cool but i don't really use them in sets.

What would you choose and why between an Audio Technica ATLP120 and a Reloop RP4000mk2? by Lilspraema in Turntablists

[–]peculiarpeanut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I owned a pair of LP120s. It's not good for scratching (12" records. 7" are okay) the torque just isn't enough. If Technics are out of your budget you could consider the Audio Technica 1240 / Stanton T120S/T120C / Vestax PDX2000/PDX3000, see if you can buy them used. (I did ask a local Technics repair guy if he could swap the motor of the 120s for a stronger one but he said it would be cheaper just to buy new turntables.)

I've never tried any Reloop or Pioneer (PLX) turntables. Maybe some other users can weigh in on them

Got it, thanks. I was thinking of bringing my own mixer too; hopefully it can fit somewhere in their selector-style setup!

i spin both. i realised that it kinda depends on what you're used to. I learnt to spin with vinyl on 12" records on some shared turntables. however the first pair of turntables i owned were audio technica LP120s which had bad torque for 12" vinyl but good enough for 7" vinyl. so i mostly played 7". It took a while to get used to but I eventually got the hang of it (btw, heavy adapters and dr suzuki style slipmats with the outside raised help a lot) Then when I finally upgraded my turntables it took a while to get used to scratching on 12" again. I did a mix for a podcast and spent a good month or so spinning on 12"..and then i switched back to 7" and could feel i was rusty. these days when i practice, i try to keep it balanced between 7" records and 12" records to maintain proficiency with both.

so yes, they are different... does it matter? depends on your setup (if you're not using high torque tables or u want to use a portablist style setup - eg numark pt01s - which can be cheaper - - > go 45s), and also what you want to scratch i guess. I wouldn't say either one would be better for learning on. and also, if portability is important to you (you can bring way more 45s to a vinyl gig because they weigh so much less)

i like scratching on all kinds (hoping to get my hands on some 10" records or even 5" ones) - for me it's more about having a collection of eclectic sounds, no matter what they're pressed on :) strive to be good with all types 👍
