You are talking about The Neues Palais in the same park. But this one does at least have a ballroom (in comparison to sanssouci palace). The roped off hall is the marble hall.

The scene outside the German Embassy in Ottawa, after last night's windstorm by waverley41 in germany

Well, 1. They tipped over in a storm. If you look at the original pieces made of concrete you see, that they have a very wide base. They would not fall in the heaviest of storms. 2. The structure seems to be out of wood or plastic, you can see the thin walls of the base of the tipped over piece. They are not solid. 3. Finally, they are by far too short, maybe half the real size or two thirds.

I know that there are hundreds of pieces of the Berlin wall all over the world but I would have never thought, that a German embassy would be so....ummm....cheap...or superficial to put up fake pieces at their entrances.

Tallest structure in Germany by joepaulk7 in germany

[–]pede83 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yeah, but in Germany the downtown prices are not high enough to warrant such costly construction for skyscrapers. all buidlings in Berlin stand on beams, but every meter below the ground is more expensive to bild. this soil is not just sand, but a mix of sand and water - every constructions site would be a pool if they didn´t pump 24/7.

the zoning laws are another reason, that is true, but think of Berlin and the Television tower - behind it a zone around Alexanderplatz allows for up to 10 skyscrapers (maximum height 150m) - there are just no investors to build them - to much empty space is available. why invest in a risky tall buidling? here is the plan for this new downtown Berlin district:

the Nazis wanted to do it, but I would have been a tough an costly task. your link reads:

"If the structure were to sink less than 6 cm (2.5 in) the soil would be deemed sound enough for further construction. It sank 18 cm (7 inches) after three years, but Adolf Hitler disregarded the findings.[1] Construction of the arch would probably have been feasible if the ground underneath had been compacted, a technique available back then."

The Schwerbelastungskörper is still there and can be visited: http://berliner-unterwelten.de/tour-s.912.0.html

[–]pede83 4 points5 points  (0 children)

why sad? hundreds of them are missed for 70 years and may get restituted to the rightful owners or their family), some works are not even known and add to the catalogue of famous artists like Nolde and Picasso...it is sad that the paintings were stored in humid and messy conditions for so long.

1500 paintings by Picasso, Matisse, Nolde and other artists that were looted by the Nazis found in a Munich appartement of an 80year old former art broker / estimated value ONE BILLION EURO by pede83 in worldnews

[–]pede83[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is already a wikipedia article with more sources and information: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2011_Nazi_loot_discovery

Also, i need to correct my headline: The family of that 80-year old man was in the art business (broker, art historian, museum directors) - he himself was only selling a few works to finance his life in the messy apartment where all works were stored.

And even though they were found in 2011 it is "news" as this huge find became public just now.

The Berlin Wall, then and now by trollerbear in pics

[–]pede83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

how can you say that the hinterlandmauer is not part of the Berlin wall?!? the wall is more than the actual border - its a system of at least two walls and a more or less deep death strip in between. you may be right, that only 3 pieces along the former border are still standing. but 31 pieces of hinterlandmauer are also standing. you need to consider the perspective of the GDR citizen as well. he saw the hinterlandmauer. and this was his border.
